A Dartmouth MITCHELMORE family

Fifth Generation

5.10 Frederick Charles PILLAR (Caroline MITCHELMORE , William Henry (1) MITCHIMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born on 12 Jan 1879 in Dartmouth, Devon. He died on 3 Jan 1963 in Cardiff, Wales.

In 1901, Frederick was a marine engineer living in St John, Cardiff, one of the busiest ports in the world at that time. For his part in a rescue during a hurricane in 1903, he was awarded a gold medal by the US Government and the silver medal and diploma of the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society. In 1908 he moved to Cardiff permanently. By 1955, he and his wife were living in Ladysmith Road, Penylan.

Frederick left the navy in 1936 to join a team which founded the Navigators and Engineer Officers Union and was joint district secretary in the Bristol Channel office until he retired in 1947. On his death, his ashes were scattered in the Bristol Channel.

Frederick married Eliza Hingston PROWSE on 7 Aug 1905. Eliza was born on 19 May 1879 and died in Mar 1963 in Stoke Fleming. She was a daughter of John PROWSE and his wife Mary Jannette née HANNAFORD.

William (or Bill, as he was known) was a builder by trade, having joined his father's business as a young man. On his father's death in 1931, Bill took it over and ran it as "R. T. Pillar & Son, builders" until 1945. He also inherited his father's house at 21 South Embankment, where he lived until his death.

Bill enlisted in 1914 in the Royal Artillery, seeing active service on the Western Front and being wounded in the Battle of Passchendale. He was given his commission in the Royal Artillery and retired at the end of the war with the rank of Lieutenant.

Bill entered Dartmouth Town Council in 1921 and served for nearly 30 years. He became an alderman, and was unamimously elected Mayor for the Coronation Year 1937. The photograph below, published in the Times of 7 April 1937 and the Western Times of two days later, shows him holding a tree planted by his daughter Helen, who acted as his mayoress. Bill held many other public offices and was made a freeman of Dartmouth. He was also a Past Master and Treasurer of Hauley Lodge of Freemasons and a Vicar's Warden at St. Barnabas Church, Dartmouth.

In 1945, Bill was found guilty of obtaining money from Government contracts by false pretences and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment. However, he was released after 3 months due to illness, paid back all the money and continued to play an important part in the public life of Dartmouth. His obituary reports that seven former mayors walked as pallbearers at his funeral.

Bill married Lily WOOLNOUGH in 1912. Lily was born in 1887 in Cleethorpes and died in June 1932 in Dartmouth. Bill and Lily had the following children:

Go back to Frederick George (1) MITCHELMORE for a photograph of George as a young man. He always maintained that he joined the Machine Gun Corps in 1918, was wounded and taken to Netley Hospital near Southampton¾but there is no mention of this in his service record. That record shows that George joined the machine gun section of the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1919. He made a name for himself as a marksman with a pistol, winning 8 or 9 cups in India about 1925.  George left the army in 1933 at the rank of sergeant and got a job as a male nurse in a mental hospital near Basingstoke, Hampshire. There he met and married his first wife, who was a cook in the same hospital.

George was recalled to the army in 1939; he was offered his old rank of sergeant in the machine gun section of The Sussex Regiment, but preferred to take up a safer position with the Military Police.  He then spent the Second World War in various establishments in England on guard duty, but also traveled back and forth across the Channel after ‘D’ Day for a period as a Dispatch Rider. Leaving the army in 1946, he returned to the Basingstoke mental hospital.

After his first wife died, he married a nursing sister in the same mental hospital.  In 1954, he changed his job to a stores assistant at the Aldermaston Atomic Research Establishment. Then in 1960 he decided to pack it all in and move to a cottage in Cornwall. George lived there alone (apart from a cat) after his second wife died, but after having a couple of strokes moved up to live with his son Brian in Gosport in 1980 and lived there until his death.

George married (1) Mary Jane WILLIAMS on 7 Oct 1933 in Basingstoke. Mary was born on 4 Jun 1901 in Dowlais, Glamorganshire, and died of cancer on 2 Mar 1951 in Basingstoke. George and Mary had the following children:

Another name transposition: This son was called "Nathaniel Frederick Thomas" in his mother's bible and always known as "Nat" within the family.

Nat joined the Royal Navy on 9 Apr 1910, shortly before his marriage, and had become Chief Engine Room Artificer (in charge of the Engine Room Department) by 1918. In World War I, he served aboard the battlecruiser HMS Lion in the same squadron as his cousin Enos. His ship was twice severely damaged by enemy action. Since HMS Lion was on active service on 15 April 1918, he must have obtained special leave to attend his father's funeral two weeks later. A detailed account of the majority of his navy career is given here.

When he was not at sea, Nat lived in Plymouth. He was recorded as living in Keyham, Devonport, in 1911 and 1918.

William married (2) Dorothy Pretoria M. FROST in late 1943. Dorothy was born on 28 May 1900 and died in January 1986 in the Norwich district.

5.48 Albert Ernest MITCHELMORE (Charles Frederick MITCHELMORE , Nathaniel MICHAMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born in Dartmouth on 24 Nov 1892 “at 20 minutes to 6 o'clock”. He died of a heart attack on 2 Oct 1968 in Bristol.

Albert was apprenticed as a painter to his father Charles in 1906 and worked in the family business. He fought in the Worcester Regiment in World War I, reaching the rank of Corporal. He was shot through the knee at Ypres, France, and taken prisoner, but news of his survival did not reach Dartmouth until shortly after his father's death in 1918. On returning from the war, Albert and his brother Arthur ran the family business on behalf of their mother for two years, but then she sold out. Albert was a journeyman painter for the rest of his life, working in Dartmouth for his uncle Ernest and then for his cousin Frank, and later for Bristol Council.

Albert learned the clarinet in the Royal Navy Military Band and played for many years in the Dartmouth Town Band. The band would practice during the week in a hall in Market Square and play every Sunday morning in the bandstand in the New Ground.

Albert lived in his father's house in 15 Newcomin Road until after his marriage, at which time he moved to Ivy Cottage, Ivy Lane. The young family moved to Avery's Meadow (221 Victoria Road) in 1927 and then to 73 Victoria Road in 1932. They often took in bed and breakfast guests, especially around Regatta time. (The present owners of 73 Victoria Road run it as a permanent bed and breakfast business, having joined two of the ground floor rooms together as a dining room.)

In 1949, Albert & Louise moved to 129 Gilda Crescent, Bristol, in order to bring them nearer to their sons Leonard and Stanley, to give their son Michael the chance of a better education, and to take Louisa away from a climate where she was developing bronchitis. Both Albert and Louisa died in this house.

Albert married Louisa Katherine SAUNDERS, daughter of Dartmouth chimney sweep William James Pepperell SANDERS and Ann Maria née PHILLIPS, on 4 Mar 1922 in Dartmouth Congregational Church. Louisa was born on 28 Apr 1896 in Dartmouth and died on 15 Oct 1973 in Bristol . For further details on Louisa and her family history, please transfer to the SAUNDERS line.
