Caroline was baptised at St Petrox Church, Dartmouth, on 23 Sep 1857, but her birth was not recorded in the civil registry. She inherited "all the houses and premises known as the Island (late Lindsay's) situate at Bearscove", the premises next to what is now the Lower Ferry slip, from her father in 1881. Memorial windows in St. Barnabas Church, Dartmouth, celebrate her life and that of her husband:

Robert joined his father's South Town business as carpenter, builder and undertaker (making it "L. C. Pillar & Son") as a young man. His brother Richard Came PILLAR joined the same firm in about 1883, making it "L. C. Pillar & Sons", but when their father died in 1893 Robert and Richard both set up their own businesses. Robert moved from Newcomen Road to Lower St. before 1891, and built the family home at 21 South Embankment (or South Parade) early in the next century. His son William Thomas joined the firm in his turn, continuing it under the name of "R. T. Pillar & Son" until 1945.

In 1891 he was recorded as employing a slaughterman, a grocer's assistant, a nurse and a female general servant. He was still living in Dartmouth at the time of the 1901 census, but is said to have left soon after to fight in the Boor War. By 1907, he was a commercial traveller living in Plymouth.

4.13 Eliza MITCHELMORE (William Henry (1) MITCHIMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born in 10 Apr 1861 at Bearcove [Bayard's Cove], Dartmouth, and died in 1902 in Brixham shortly after the birth of her last child.

At age 19, when her father died he left her "my two Dwellinghouses and premises situate in Newcomin Road Saint Petrox ... except the Cellars thereunder which I have given to my son William Henry Mitchelmore". After her marriage, she moved with her husband to Fore Street, Brixham.

Eliza married John Putt DECENT on 24 Mar 1885 in Dartmouth. John, son of master mariner William DECENT and his wife Jane Poole née PUTT, was born on 8 Aug 1860 at Manor Terrace, Brixham. He died on 8 Mar 1930 in Brixham and was buried in St Mary's churchyard.

John lived all his life in Brixham. He lost his mother when he was only 4 year old, and in 1871 he was living with his widowed aunt Mary Ann COLLIER at 10 Manor Terrace along with his sisters Jane (8) and Sarah (12) . By 1881, he had moved to Dartmouth to become an assistant to draper and milliner Georgina PARVIS at New Quay. After his marriage, he set up his own drapery business in Fore Street, Brixham. Two years after his first wife died, John married Blanche KING. By 1916, he had become a Justice of the Peace and was living at The Cedars, Brixham.

Henry was born on 15 Jul 1860 in Dartmouth, son of coal and corn merchant William Aysh HAWKE and his wife Rebecca née MUMFORD.

William started his working life in his father's business in Foss Street, Dartmouth. After his marriage, he moved to Higher Mount Galpin, Townstall, where he also became an agent for Royal Exchange Insurance. About 1893, the family moved to South Brent, Devon, where William ran his own business as a coal and corn merchant. In 1914, he was reported to be a railway goods delivery agent and a "miller (water)" in South Brent. For further information on William's family, click here

4.15 Edith Augusta MITCHELMORE (William Henry (1) MITCHIMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born in 1864 in Dartmouth.

Upon her father's death in 1881, she inherited "the two houses in Carlton Terrace, New Road, Dartmouth [now Victoria Road] which I lately purchased from Mr Ashford". In 1890 her mother was living in one of these houses and in 1897 her brother Charles was living in the other.

In 1891, she was visiting Kate SEWELL, a sister of her future husband. After her marriage, she moved to Finchley, Middlesex.

Edith married Walter Manning SEWELL on 23 Dec 1893 in Dartmouth. Walter was born in 1866 in Middleton, Suffolk, son of farmer William Hullen SEWELL and his wife Sarah Ann née MANNING.

Walter was recorded as a warehouseman in 1891 and on his marriage certificate. In 1901, he was a "warehouseman ladies under clothing".

4.17 Frederick George (1) MITCHELMORE (William Henry (1) MITCHIMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born in 1869 in Dartmouth. Family tradition has it that he was killed in France serving in the army during World War I, but there is no record of this on the War Graves Commission website.

After his father's death when he was only 12, Frederick moved with his mother to 2 Carlton Terrace, Dartmouth. In accordance with his father's will, in which he also inherited fields and premises at "Ridges", he was given "a good boarding school consistent with [his father's] position in life for the term of three years". In 1891 he was a boarding clerk, but by 1897 was running the Dartmouth Arms Public House in Lower Street. By 1902, he had become a coal merchant with a business on the North Embankment.

Frederick married Mabel Augusta Mary ATHERTON, on 27 Dec 1893 in Dartmouth St Petrox. Mabel, known in the family as Augusta, was born in Dartmouth in 1872. She was a daughter of Thomas William ATHERTON, a Master at Arms in the Royal Navy, and his wife Susan Elizabeth Wotton.

Augusta took over the running of the Dartmouth Arms Public House sometime between 1897 and 1901. Augusta lived in Basingstoke with her son George during the 1940s but then moved up to Burton-on-Trent to live with her other son, Fred. Later, she went to Leicester and got a job as a housekeeper.

In 1901, Charles was a seaman in the Royal Navy and living with his family in Devonport, Devon.

Charles married Minnie Emma DAVIS in 1895. Minnie was born in Devonport in 1871. They had the following child:

5.43

Frederick C MALLETT was born in 1895 in Devonport.

4.24 Augustus John MITCHELMORE (Nathaniel MICHAMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born on 6 Mar 1863 in Dartmouth. He died on 10 Mar 1929 at the Chilton Nursing Home, Plymouth, as a result of an enlarged prostate, nephritis and cardiac failure and was buried in Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth.

Augustus was recorded as a boat builder in 1881. After a few years in the merchant navy, he entered the Royal Navy in 1889 and rose steadily through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as shipwright lieutenant commander in 1926. In 1919, he was awarded the MBE for his services during World War I. A detailed account of his illustrious naval career has been kindly provided by Richard Taylor, Secretary of the Naval Historical Collectors and Research Association.

Possibly because he was away from Dartmouth and already established in the Royal Navy, the inheritance Augustus received on his father's death  in 1897 consisted solely of his father's watch.

Augustus retired in 1919, at which time he was living at 8 St James Terrace, Keyham, Plymouth.  In 1926 , he was reported to be living at Belcroft, Cowes, Isle of Wight. It is possible that he worked for the famous White’s shipyard in Cowes, a company that was successful in the post-war years despite the decline in the need for warships.

At the time of his death in 1929, Augustus was living at 8 Beauchamp Terrace, Peverell, Plymouth. A death notice appeared in the Western Evening Herald and an obituary in the London Times

Augustus married Rosalie Emmeline HODGE in Stoke Damerel in 1887. Rosalie was a daughter of naval pensioner William HODGE, previously chief boatman in the Coast Guard at Dartmouth, and his wife Angelina. She was born in 1864 and died in 1946 in Plymouth. They had the following child:

5.44

i

Bessie Rosalie MITCHELMORE was born in 1889 in Stoke Damerel. She died, apparently unmarried, on 2 Sep 1971 in Plymouth and was buried in Ford Park, Plymouth.

4.25 William Arthur MITCHELMORE (Nathaniel MICHAMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born in 1865 in Torquay. He died on 16 Oct 1909 in Dartmouth.

Several times in later records, William gives his birthplace as Dartmouth. This may have been because he lived in Dartmouth for most of his childhood. (His younger brother Charles, also born in Torquay, also gave his birthplace as Dartmouth in the 1901 census.)

In 1886, William joined the Royal Navy as a stoker. His naval career lasted until 1896, when he was invalided out of the service with a wrist infection while working at the Chatham base.Possibly because he was living away from Dartmouth, the inheritance William received on his father's death  in 1897 consisted solely of his father's watch chain.

In the 1891 census, William was living aboard HMS Britannia in Dartmouth harbour while his wife and son were still living in Llandudno. Strangely, William was recorded as unmarried. His whereabouts in the 1901 census has not been determined, but his wife and son were both living in Birkenhead (his wife in a workhouse).

William was buried at Longcross Cemetery, Townstal. His gravestone records that he was a boatswain aged 44.

William married (1) Elizabeth BESWICK in St John's Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Llandudno, Denbighshire, on 25 Jun 1889. The bride and groom were both living in Gadlys House, Llandudno at the time. Elizabeth was born in 1865, the daughter of mariner Richard BESWICK.

William and Elizabeth had one child:

Enos Augustus MITCHELMORE, also known as Ernest, was born on 29 Jul 1890 in Llandudno and died in 1971 in Plymouth.

In 1891, Enos was living with his mother in Llandudno but in 1901 he was boarding alone in Birkenhead. He joined the Royal Navy as a stoker in 1907, was promoted to Leading Stoker in 1916, and was still engaged in 1929. In World War I, he served aboard the battle cruiser HMS New Zealand in the same squadron as his cousin Nat and was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his services.  A detailed account of the majority of his naval career is given here.

Enos married Margaret L STEER in Plymouth in 1935. They do not appear to have had any children.

4.26 Charles Frederick MITCHELMORE (Nathaniel MICHAMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born on 28 Dec 1867 in Torquay, Devon, and died on 28 Apr 1918 in Dartmouth.

Charles was originally apprenticed as a baker, but then entered his father's painting and decorating business some time in the 1880s. He and his family lived in Lower Street, in the same building as his parents and the family business. He inherited part of the business on his father's death in 1897, but by 1900 had moved to "Orcana", 15 Newcomin Road, Dartmouth, and set up his own business. Weekly advertisements appeared in the Dartmouth Chronicle. At some stage, he opened an art gallery at the same location.

Charles's death and funeral were reported in the 28 April 1918 issue of the Dartmouth Chronicle. The reporter surmises that Charles' illness "was doubtless in part due to anxiety as to the fate of his son [Albert] ... from whom no news had been received since the German attack."

In his will, Charles left his entire estate (valued at 448 pounds and 10 shillings) to his wife Caroline. His sons Albert and Arthur continued to run the painting business for their mother, but two years later she sold out.

Charles married Caroline Louisa TUCKER, daughter of Dartmouth Trinity House pilot Thomas TUCKER and Sarah Ann née POPE, on 24 Nov 1887 in the Congregational Church, Paignton, Devon. An announcement appeared in the Dartmouth Chronicle.

Caroline was born on 29 May 1864 in Dartmouth and died on 13 Feb 1938 in Paignton. Her bible records the dates (and some times) of birth of all her children and most of her grandchildren. For further details on Caroline and her family history, please transfer to the TUCKER line.

4.25 Alfred Ernest MITCHELMORE (Nathaniel MICHAMORE , John (1) MICHELMORE , John (2) ) was born in 1875 in Dartmouth and died there on 22 Mar 1926.

Although registered at birth, marriage and death as Alfred Ernest, this son was consistently known in the family as Ernest.

Ernest was a painter all his life, having no doubt been apprenticed to his father. He inherited part of the family business on his father's death in 1897 and continued to run it from the same premises in Lower Street under the name of "E. A. Mitchelmore". By 1923, he had moved to 9 Fairfax Place, Dartmouth.

It is known that in 1906 Ernest travelled aboard the Saint Louis from Southampton to New York, landing at Ellis Island on 18 November. He stated that he was visiting his friend J Goldstein of 247 W 117 Street, New York. He was said to be 5' 9½" tall, with fair hair and brown eyes. The occasion of his visit is not known.

The Dartmouth Chronicle of 26 March 1926 reports that Ernest collapsed and died one afternoon while engaged in fitting a plate glass window. A large crowd of relatives, friends and business associates attended his funeral, and the flags of the Constitutional Club and the British Legion flew at half-mast.

Alfred married Mabel (Gertrude) BEADON in 1897. She announced that she would continue Ernest's business after he died, but it was in effect run by her son Frank.

Some time later, Frank sold the business and retired to Babbacombe, Torquay.
