2.1 John (2) TUCKER (Thomas (3) ) was christened on 29 Mar 1807 in Salcombe, Devon.
John probably moved to Brixham to live before his marriage there in 1830. He was a labourer in 1839, but became a mariner by 1841, no doubt fishing in the popular East Channel and North Sea fishing grounds which were becoming increasingly popular with Brixham fishermen. Lloyd's Captains' Register (1869) indicates that he was granted a Certificate of Service as a master mariner in 1855. He captained the Violet in 1855-1858, the Alarm in 1859, and the Violet again in 1860, both ships being engaged in trade along the coasts of Holland, Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal. In 1861 he was employed as captain of the Recovery, which also traded with Mediterraean ports, and remained master until the vessel was stranded on 28 Aug 1868. After this, he was engaged as master of the Henry Emmett.
Various records show him and/or his family living in Milton Street (1841), Drew Street (1851), Reahill (1861), and Furzeham Terrace (1870-1871). John was often away at sea on census night¾in fact, in 1841 both parents were away from home and had left their sons Henry, John and Robert in the care of their mother's parents.
John married Mary YANDELL, daughter of quarryman Robert YANDELL and Margaret (Peggy) née ATTWILL, on 28 Jun 1830 in Brixham, Devon. Mary was christened on 14 Jul 1811 in Landrake, Cornwall.
The YANDELL family originally came from Brixham, but in about 1800 moved to Cornwall, where Mary's grandfather was said to have owned a quarry. Perhaps Mary met John on a visit to relatives in Brixham. (Her father had also moved back to Brixham by 1841.)

M i Henry (1) TUCKER was christened on 1 Apr 1832 in Brixham. In 1851, he was an apprentice shoe maker living with his parents in Drew Street. Later he became a seaman and in 1881 was recorded on board the vessel Glance in South Shields, Durham, by which time he was married. +
