NEWS 2003

12/11/03: All the WTA tournaments of the season have already finished, so the last published rankings are almost the last rankings of the season. Magüi has finished the season with an excellent ranking, she's the number 22 of the world, just one place from the best ranking in her career, and it's her best ranking at the end of a season during her career. Magüi has been this season about to enter the top 20 for the first time in her career, let's hope that she gets that next season.

06/11/03: During the off season, we've been updating the site. We've updated completely two sections: results and links. We have added three new sections in the site: Points to defend, Matches on tape and Updates. From now on, all the updates that we do in the site (except for the news) will be announced in the Updates section. Ah, we have also changed the front page. We hope that you like it!.

23/10/03: The season is now over for Magüi. A very good season, where Magüi has won two singles titles, has reached two doubles finals, and has improved her WTA Singles Ranking a lot, moving from number 50 in the world, to into the top 25. She also has become fixed for the Spanish Fed Cup team, having the chance of playing the singles matches of the ties, and she has finished her bad run in the Grand Slams, having not lost in any of them in the first round for the first time in some years. Now we hope that she enjoys her deserved holidays and prepares well the next season, where one of the most important events will be the Olympic Games in Athens, and we expect that Magüi will have the chance of taking part in the Games for the second time in her career. From here we’ll keep informing you about how Magüi is doing. Many thanks to all the people that visit this web.

23/10/03: Bad news. Magüi has lost to Paola by 7-5 and 6-3. A shame that Magüi hasn't been able to win a close first set, the match would have changed a lot.

22/10/03: Magüi plays tomorrow Paola Suárez, seed number 7. It's the fifth match on Centre Court, the first one starts at 14 h. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

22/10/03: Bad news in doubles. Magüi and Hantuchova have lost surprisingly against Benesova/Pastikova by 6-2, 4-6 and 7-5. Let's hope that things go better tomorrow in singles.

21/10/03: Good news!!. Magüi has defeated Likhovtseva by 6-4 and 7-5 in a tough match in which Magüi saved a set point in the second set. In the second round, she'll play the Argentinian Paola Suárez, seed number 7. GOOD LUCK!!. In doubles, Magüi and Hantuchova will play tomorrow the Czechs Benesova/Pastikova in the quarterfinals.

20/10/03: Magüi will play tomorrow Elena Lihovtseva in the first round in singles. It's the second match on Centre Court (the first one starts at 14 h). The matches between Magüi and Likhovtseva are usually really close, but Magüi has defeated the Russian in most of them, so let's hope that she can do it again. ¡¡VAMOS!!. BTW, this match will be broadcasted LIVE on Eurosport.

20/10/03: Magüi and Daniela have reached the doubles quarterfinals after defeating Jeyaseelan/Matevzic by 6-4, 3-6 and 6-1.

19/10/03: Tomorrow starts the tournament in Linz, Austria, which will be, in principle, the last tournament of the season for Magüi. In singles, Magüi will play the Russian Elena Likhovtseva in the first round. In doubles, Magüi plays this week with Daniela Hantuchova, they are the seeds number 3, and will play tomorrow Jeyaseelan/Matevzic in the first round. Good luck in this tournament!.

19/10/03: It wasn't possible. Magüi and Alicia lost to Clijsters/Sugiyama, seeds number 1, by 6-4 y 6-2. Anyway, a great tournament in doubles.

17/10/03: It was worth the wait!. Great win for Magüi and Alicia against Raymond/Stubbs, a really tough team, in a very close match by 7-5 and 7-6 (7-3) to reach the semifinals, which will be played tomorrow Saturday. They'll play the winners of the match between Clijsters/Sugiyama and Likhovtseva/Martínez, which will be played tonight, in the last match of the day. CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD LUCK!!.

16/10/03: Magüi and Alicia will finally play tomorrow Friday from 12 h against Raymond/Stubbs. Let's hope that they can win, although it is a really hard match. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

15/10/03: Magüi and Alicia must play their quarterfinals doubles match yet, but although they played the first round on Sunday, it seems they won't play their match tomorrow, because they aren't in the provisional schedule for tomorrow. They'll play Raymond/Stubbs again, seeds number 3 of the tournament. Let's hope that they can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

13/10/03: Bad news. Magüi has lost to the Japanese Sugiyama by 6-3, 3-6 and 6-1. A shame, because although she wasn't lucky at all with the draw, it seemed she could react after winning the second set, but let's hope that she is luckier on Wednesday in doubles.

12/10/03: Magüi and Alicia have defeated Bacsinszky/Vakulenko in the first round in doubles by 6-2, 2-6 and 7-6 (7-3). Tomorrow Magüi will play Sugiyama in the first round. It's the third match on Centre Court, the first one starts at 10 h. Let's hope that she can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

12/10/03: Magüi defeated the Czech Kleinova yesterday by 6-0 and 7-5 in the second round of the qualifying. Today she has lost by second week in a row against the Slovenian Tina Pisnik, seed number 8 of the qualifying, by 7-6 (7-5) and 7-5, but in spite of this defeat Magüi has been lucky because she is one of the 'lucky losers' and will play in the main draw, where she'll play the Japanese Ai Sugiyama, sixth-seeded, in the first round. In doubles, Magüi and Molik will play today the Wild Cards Bacsinszky/Vakulenko in the first round. Let's hope that things go well this week. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

10/10/03: Good news!. Magüi is the seed number one of the qualifying and has defeated the German Wild Card Anna-Lena Grönefeld by 6-4 and 6-3. Tomorrow she'll play the Czech Sandra Kleinova in the second round of the qualifying. Let's hope that she can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

08/10/03: Bad news. Magüi and Alicia have lost to Raymond/Stubbs by 6-4 and 6-2. This week things haven't gone well at all, but let's hope that Magüi is luckier in Zürich. The qualifying's draw will be done tomorrow Thursday at 16 h, but we won't be able to inform until Friday when Magüi has already played her first-round match. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

07/10/03: Tomorrow Wednesday Magüi and Alicia will play their first round in doubles against Raymond/Stubbs. The two last tournaments of the season for Magüi will be Zürich (Switzerland) and Linz (Austria). There's no much time to rest, because in principle Magüi must play the qualifying in Zürich, and this starts next Friday. The last tournaments of the season are really tough, the qualifyings have a great level, and even some top 25 (for example Magüi) don't play directly the main draw. But let's hope that Magüi is luckier next week and can have some good results. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

06/10/03: Vote for Magüi here!. We are in the last round of the contest and Magüi is one of the 25 remaining players in this last round.

05/10/03: Well, things went badly for Magüi in Filderstadt. She was the second seed in the qualifying and she lost yesterday to Tina Pisnik by 6-3 and 6-3 in the first round. The Slovenian player took revenge after three consecutive defeats against Magüi, two of them just a couple of months ago. The qualifying of this tournament was really tough, but this early defeat has been a shame, because Magüi was fighting to get closed to the top 20, and the thing is now more complicated after this defeat. Let's hope that she does better in doubles, although it will be tough, because Magüi and Alicia will play Raymond/Stubbs, seeds number two, in the first round on Wednesday. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

03/10/03: Tomorrow starts the qualifying of the tournament in Filderstadt, in Germany, and in principle Magüi has to play it, but until we don't see the draw we can't confirm it. Let's see if she can do a good tournament here.

02/10/03: Bad day for Magüi. In singles, Magüi hasn't been able to do anything against a fit Myskina and has lost by 6-3 and 6-1 (this match has been broadcasted live on Eurosport). Later, Magüi and Alicia did it tough for Kuznetsova/Navratilova, but they have ended losing by 6-4 and 7-5. Next Magüi's tournament will be Filderstadt.

01/10/03: Magüi will play tomorrow Thursday in singles and doubles. Magüi has a really tough match tomorrow, because the two last tournaments of Myskina have been excellent, but we hope that Magüi ends with the Russian's run and can win. The match is on Centre Court at 15 h, local time. It will be live on Eurosport. She has also a tough doubles match tomorrow. Magüi and Alicia play Kuznetsova/Navratilova, seeds number one of the tournament. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

30/09/03: Magüi and Molik have defeated Poutchek/Voracova by 3-6, 6-1 and 6-2. In the second round, they'll probably play Kuznetsova/Navratilova. Magüi will play tomorrow Wednesday (we guess) the Russian Myskina in the second round in singles. Let's hope that she can win.

30/09/03: Magüi and Molik play today Poutchek/Voracova in the first round. The match is at 13 h, local time, on Court 3. Let's hope that they can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

29/09/03: Good news!. Magüi has defeated Silvia Farina after losing the first set. The final score has been 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2. Congratulations!. In the second round, Magüi will play the Russian Anastasia Myskina, seed number 4 of the tournament, who has just won the tournament in Leipzig. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

29/09/03: Magüi plays today Silvia Farina Elia from 11 h, local time. Let's hope that she can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

28/09/03: Moscow's draw has already been released. Magüi hasn't been too lucky and has a tough draw, having to play the Italian Silvia Farina Elia in the first round. Let's hope that she can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!. In doubles, Magüi and Alicia Molik will play Poutchek/Voracova in the first round.

25/09/03: Next Monday starts the tournament in Moscow and Magüi won't have to play the qualifying due to the withdrawal of some players. The time difference between Moscow and Spain is +2 hours.

23/09/03: These are the tournaments that Magüi is going to play till the end of the season, all of them indoors: next week she'll play in Moscow (in principle, she is supposed to play the qualifying rounds, but she would be the irst player to enter the main draw if anyone withdraws, so we have to wait to see if anyone withdraws and she doesn't need to play the qualifying rounds), and later in Filderstadt, Zürich and Linz. Let's hope that she is luckier in the end of the season.

22/09/03: Bad news. Magüi has lost to Chladkova by 6-1 and 7-5. We don't know what has happened in this match, but it was stopped over an hour when Magüi was losing by 1-6 and 2-2, but she seemed to be playing better (it's weird that such a thing happens indoors, it seems the air conditioning system caused air bubbles to surface on the carpet. The problem went away once it was turned off. Magüi's rival commented that t was like they were on the sea, like they were flowing and it was hardly possible to even walk). A shame, because Magüi was leading by 5-4 in the second set. Later, Magüi and Meghann have lost to Bartoli/Dokic by 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2. Bad start of the indoor season, but we hope she is luckier in the next tournaments. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

22/09/03: Magüi will play today the Czech Chladkova in the first round in Leipzig. It's the third match on court 3 (the first one starts at 12 h, local time). Let's hope she can win. Later, and on the same court, Magüi and Shaughnessy will play Bartoli/Dokic, seeds number 4, in the first round. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

20/09/03: Magüi will play the Czech Denisa Chladkova in the first round in Leipzig. Let's hope that she can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

18/09/03: Next Monday starts the tournament in Leipzig, Germany. Magüi won't have to play the qualifying this year. Let's hope that she does well and has a good indoors-season start. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

05/09/03: Vote for Magüi here if you haven't done yet!. To reach the following round she has to be top 25, and at this moment she isn't there.

01/09/03: In the sports radio programme 'El Larguero', of Cadena Ser, there is lately a section of 'sports women'. They make a short presentation of a Spanish sports woman and they make an interview. Someone told us that on 28 August it was Magüi's turn and they interviewed her when she was in New York playing the US Open. You can hear it here. Sorry, it's in Spanish, we'll try to write the full transcription and translation in the next days/weeks in the interviews section (when we have time, it takes a long time to do such a thing). Many thanks to Sergio for the information, because it isn't easy to find this.

29/08/03: Bad news. :(:(. Bad day for Magüi, who has lost both in singles and doubles by exactly the same score, 7-5 and 6-1. A shame, because they had it really tough in doubles, but we had the hope that Magüi could go far in singles, because it seemed all her rivals were more or less beatable. But well, that's the way tennis is, more luck next time. The tournament is over for Magüi, and now we'll have to wait some weeks to see her play again, because her next tournaments will be from 22nd of September: Leipzig, Moscow and Filderstadt, all of them indoors. Let's hope that she can do well there.

28/08/03: Magüi plays today her second-round match against Mª Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo. It's the second match on Court 6, after a men's match that starts at 11 h, local time. Later, and on Court 8, Magüi and Alicia will play their first doubles round. Tomorrow we'll inform about these two results. GOOD LUCK!!. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

27/08/03: Good news!. Magüi has defeated Cho by 3-6, 6-2 and 6-1, reaching the second round, where she'll play tomorrow Thursday the Spaniard Mª Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo. Fortunately, after a first set 'scare', Magüi could react and defeat the Korean for the first time. The match against Mª Antonia will be tough, because this defeated Magüi last May in Madrid, but we hope that this time Magüi can win. Anyway, tough doubles draw for Magüi. Magüi and Alicia Molik will play the seeds number 6 in the first round, Dementieva/Krasnoroutskaya, probably tomorrow Thursday. Let's hope that they are lucky. ¡¡VAMOS!!. This is what Magüi said after her first-round win: "I feel happy for the win and because I have avenged the defeat I suffered last year. Now I have to play Sánchez Lorenzo and, although we are friends, each of us will play on the court to get the win".

25/08/03: Magüi will play tomorrow Tuesday against the Korean Yoon Jeong Cho in the first round of the US Open. Let's hope that she can win.

24/08/03: It wasn't possible. Magüi and Alicia lost to Vivi and Paola by 7-6 (8-6) and 6-3 in the doubles final. Anyway, great tournament for Magüi both in doubles and singles.

23/08/03: MAGÜI IN THE DOUBLES FINAL!! :):). Magüi and Alicia reached the doubles final by defeating Bartoli/Casanova in a very close match by 5-7, 7-5 and 6-4. Today they'll play in the final the seeds number one of the tournament, Virginia Ruano and Paola Suárez. Let's hope that they can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

22/08/03: It wasn't possible :(. Magüi has lost to Davenport by 6-0 and 7-5. Good tournament for Magüi, anyway. In doubles, things went much better and Magüi and Alicia have reached the semifinals after winning by 6-3 and 7-5. Today they'll play Bartoli/Casanova in the semifinals. Let's hope that they can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

21/08/03: The US Open's draw is already known. Magüi will play the Korean Yoon Jeong Cho in the first round. Magüi has lost two years in a row in the first round (last year against this year's rival), but she seems to be in a good moment, so let's hope she can have a good performance this year. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

21/08/03: Good news!!. Magüi has defeated Maleeva for the second consecutive week, this time in two sets by 7-6 (7-4) and 6-3. In the quarterfinals she'll play Davenport, seed number 1 of the tournament, from 19 h, local time. Let's hope that she is lucky. Later, Magüi and Alicia won in doubles by 6-2 and 7-5, and they'll play today Huber/Maleeva, seeds number 2. GOOD LUCK!!.

20/08/03: Magüi plays today her second-round match against the Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva, seed number 6 of the tournament, whom she defeated last week. As curiosity, both Magüi's rivals in this tournament so far were also rivals in the first and second round last week. Magüi could defeat Maleeva last week in a tough match, let's hope that she can do it again today. It's the second match on Grandstand Court (the first match starts at 12 h, local time), and later she'll play her doubles match. GOOD LUCK!!.

19/08/03: Magüi will be in principle the seed number 30 at the US Open, last Grand Slam of the season that starts next Monday. Magüi is this week the number 32 in the ranking, but the confirmed withdrawals of Serena Williams and Monica Seles make that at the moment, and if there aren't late withdrawals, Magüi is the seed number 30 for tomorrow Wednesday's draw.

19/08/03: Good news!. Magüi has defeated the Slovenian Tina Pisnik by 0-6, 6-4 and 6-2. Fortunately, Magüi has recovered after a terrible start. In the second round she'll play tomorrow Wednesday the winner of the match between Tanasugarn and Maleeva, who play today. Let's hope that she can win today.

18/08/03: Magüi will play this week again the Slovenian Tina Pisnik, a qualifier this week. It's the third match on Grandstand (the first one starts at 12 h, local time). Let's hope that Magüi can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

17/08/03: Magüi will play in the first round in New Haven against a qualifier. Let's hope that she can win. In doubles, Magüi and Molik will play Myskina/Zvonareva in the first round.

14/08/03: Bad news. Magüi has lost to Srebotnik by 6-1 and 7-6 (7-4). A shame, because after a bad start, Magüi has reacted, but she hasn't been able to win the tie-break, which would have given her all options. Well, let's hope that Magüi is luckier in New Haven, tournament that starts next Sunday. The time difference between New Haven and Spain is -6 hours. 

14/08/03: Magüi and Alicia lost their doubles match by 6-2 and 6-4. Today, from 11 h local time on Court 1, Magüi will play her third-round match against the Slovenian Srebotnik, who defeated yesterday the French Loit. Let's hope that Magüi can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

13/08/03: On the site http://heroes.sanex.net/us/herovote/ has started the third round of the competition for the favourite player of 2003, so don't wait more!, VOTE FOR MAGÜI!!, each time is more difficult because there are less players ;). 

13/08/03: Good news!. Great win of Magüi. Magüi has defeated the Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva, seed number 6, in a very tough match by 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4. Well done Magüi :):). Tomorrow Thursday she'll play the winner of the match between Srebotnik and Loit. In doubles, Magüi and Alicia won in the first round by 6-2 and 6-2, and they'll play today Hantuchova/Husarova, seeds number 3. Let's hope that they can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

12/08/03: Good news!. Magüi has defeated Pisnik in a tough match by 7-5 and 6-3, so she reaches de second round, where she'll play today the Bulgarian Maggie Maleeva, seed number 6 of the tournament. It's the third match on court 1 (the first one starts at 11 h, local time). Later and on the same court she'll play doubles. Let's hope that things go well. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

11/08/03: Magüi will play today her first-round match against Tina Pisnik. It's the second match on court 1 (the first one starts at 11 h, local time). Let's hope that she can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!. Tomorrow we'll write her result. In doubles, Magüi plays this week with the Australian Alicia Molik and will play the Canadians Drake/Marois in the first round.

10/08/03: The Toronto's draw has already been released. Magüi will play the Slovenian Tina Pisnik in the first round. Let's hope that Magüi can defeat her. ¡¡VAMOS!!. 

08/08/03: Also in doubles things went badly and Magüi and Nicole lost to Petrova/Srebotnik by 6-2 and 6-3. Let's hope that things go much better next week in Toronto, tournament that Magüi will finally play. The time difference between Toronto and Spain is -6 hours. 

06/08/03: Bad news. Magüi did it tough for Kuznetsova, but ended losing to the Russian by 6-3 and 7-6 (7-3). Let's hope that she is luckier next week. Tonight, Magüi and Nicole will play their first-round doubles match. Let's hope that they can win.

05/08/03: In the tournament in Los Ángeles, Magüi will play today her first-round match against the Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova from 10 h, local time, on court 4. Tough match for Magüi, because the Russian comes from doing a great tournament last week, but let's hope that Magüi can defeat her. Anyway, Magüi and Pratt have played the doubles qualifying round and have reached the main draw after defeating  Frazier/Schmidt in the last qualifying round by 6-3 and 6-2. In the first doubles round they'll play Petrova/Srebotnik. Let's hope that Magüi can do a good tournament. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

30/07/03: Magüi hasn't been able to defeat Dokic, she's lost by 2-6, 6-2 and 6-3. Her next tournament will be next week in Los Angeles . The time difference between Los Ángeles and Spain is -9 hours.

29/07/03: Good news!. Magüi has defeated the American Laura Granville by 6-3 and 6-3. In the second round she will face the Yugoslavian Jelena Dokic, seed number 9 of the tournament. The match will be played today at 10 h (local time) on Centre Court. Let's see if she's lucky.

28/07/03: Magüi plays today the second match on Centre Court. The first one starts at 10 h (local time). Let's hope that she can win. Tomorrow we'll update the result. Magüi won't play in the main doubles draw after losing in the qualifying round against Bartoli/Pratt by 8/2.

27/07/03: San Diego's draw has been released. Magüi will play the American Laura Granville in the first round. Let's hope that she can do well. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

23/07/03: Magüi will play next week the tournament in San Diego, on hard court. Let's hope that Magüi's draw is 'nice' and that she can go far. The time difference between San Diego and Spain is -9 hours. By the way, in principle it seems that Magüi will play the doubles with the Australian Alicia Molik in the next tournaments due to the future retirement of Magüi's usual partner this season, the Dutch Kristie Boogert. Let's hope that they can do well.

21/07/03: It wasn't possible. Spain lost to France in the Fed Cup quarterfinals by 4 to 1. Magüi lost her first match on Saturday against Dechy by 6-3 and 6-4. It wasn't Magüi's day, but in spite of this, the match was very close and there were always hopes of reaction till the last moment. On Sunday Magüi played a great first set, but she ended losing to Mauresmo by 7-5 and 6-2. Magüi started dominating and playing at a great level, she even had set ball at 5-3, and later was serving for the set with 5-4, but Mauresmo woke up and Magüi went down. Let's hope that there is better luck next year in the Fed Cup. Vamos Magüi and the rest of components of the Spanish team!!. We have added here some Magüi's words during this tie. We'll add some pics in the next days.

18/07/03: The order of play of the Fed Cup tie between Spain and France is already known. Magüi will play Dechy tomorrow Saturday from 11 h, and on Sunday also from 11 h against Mauresmo. Let's hope that Magüi and all of the components of the Spanish team are lucky in this tough tie. ¡¡VAMOS!!. We'll be there supporting the Spanish team, so we'll inform about the scores when we come back from Oviedo.

14/07/03: After the Fed Cup (next Friday we'll give some information about the order of play), Magüi will travel to the US to prepare the American hard court season. She will play the following tournaments: San Diego, Los Ángeles , Toronto (yet to be confirmed), New Haven and US Open .

10/07/03: Next Friday 18 of July will be done the draw for the Fed Cup tie between Spain and France. If there are no late changes, Magüi will be the number one of the Spanish team and will play Nathalie Dechy on Saturday and Amelie Mauresmo on Sunday. In principle, according to the ranking and heads to heads, the French are the favourite ones for this tie, but we hope that the Spanish crowd help Spain to give a nice surprise. We'll be there to support Magüi and the other Spanish players. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

09/07/03: Bad news. Surprising defeat of Magüi against Cervanova by 6-3 and 6-1. A shame, because Magüi had always defeated the Slovak in two sets, but it seems that Magüi didn't have a good day. Let's hope that things go better in the Fed Cup on 19 and 20 July, where Spain will play France. ¡¡VAMOS MAGÜI!!. 

09/07/03: At last the Spanish Fed Cup team has been announced and there has been a big surprise, Conchita Martínez won't be in the team because of own decision (there were comments the last days about this happening), that means that Magüi will be the number one of the Spanish team. The Spanish team is: Magüi Serna, Mª Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo, Vivi Ruano and Anabel Medina. Let's hope that they are lucky against the tough French team, formed by Mauresmo, Dechy, Loit and Cohen-Aloro.

09/07/03: Magüi will play today from 17.30 h, local time, on Centre Court against Cervanova. Let's hope that she is lucky and can reach the quarters. Anyway, today it's the last day to announce the Spanish Fed Cup team, and we expect Magüi to be in the team. Almost all teams except for the Spanish one have already been announced.

08/07/03: Good news!!. Magüi has defeated Conchita Martínez Granados by 6-3, 3-6 and 6-1. In second round she'll play the Slovak Ludmila Cervanova. Let's hope that Magüi can defeat her. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

08/07/03: Magüi will play today Conchita Martínez Granados her first-round match from 16 h, local time, on court 2. Let's hope that she is lucky and has had time to recover from injury, illness (after contradictory news, it was finally a stomachal virus what Magüi had at Wimbledon)and family celebrations and is fit enough for this tournament ;). ¡¡VAMOS!!.

06/07/03: Magüi is the top seed in Palermo and will play the Spaniard Conchita Martínez Granados in the first round on Tuesday. GOOD LUCK!!. Magüi won't play doubles this week.

04/07/03: Many players have withdrawn from Palermo's tournament (Fed Cup is so close...), but it seems that Magüi will finally play this tournament and that she'll be the seed number one, but we'll have to wait till the draw is done to confirm this. GOOD LUCK!!.

03/07/03: Although according to WTA site Magüi's retirement from doubles match was due to an illness, someone that was there comments that Magüi was a little bit injured during her second singles match, and maybe the retirement from doubles was because this small injury was bothering her. This person also comments that Magüi was really upset about having to retire. Let's hope that this small injury isn't too important and she can be fit enough for the next tournaments. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

30/06/03: These are Magüi's next tournaments: Magüi should play next week the tournament in Porto, where she has reached two finals in a row, but this tournament has been cancelled, so it's possible (but not confirmed) that Magüi plays next week the tournament in Palermo, last tournament of the clay season. Later, on 19 and 20 July, Spain plays against France in Oviedo the Fed Cup quarterfinals, also on clay. In principle, although the Spanish team hasn't been announced, it would be a big surprise if Magüi wasn't in the team. Later, Magüi will travel to the USA to play the hard court tournaments, starting with the tournament in San Diego (week 28 July), and the following week she will play in Los Angeles. We hope that Magüi has good results in the next tournaments. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

26/06/03: Bad news. Magüi and Boogie have withdrawn from their doubles match when they were losing by 7-5 and 1-0 due to Magüi's illness. Let's hope that it isn't important.

25/06/03: Magüi and Boogie will play tomorrow in the first round against Asagoe/Miyagi. It's the third match on court 8 (the first match starts at 12 h, local time, 13 h in Spain). Let's hope that they can win. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

25/06/03: Bad news :(:(:(. Magüi has lost in the second round in Wimbledon against Maja Matevzic by 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4. A real shame, because after Magüi won the first set, the Slovenian broke too early in the second set, and in the third set Magüi was leading 3-1 and serve (she even had point for 4-1), and there was rain delay with 4-4 in the third set. A shame, because Magüi really wanted to go far in this tournament, but that's the way tennis is. Let's hope that things go better tomorrow in doubles. ¡¡VAMOS MAGÜI!!.

24/06/03: Magüi will play tomorrow Wednesday in the second round against the lefty Slovenian Maja Matevzic, a tough rival who defeated Magüi last year when they faced for the first time, but let's hope that things go much better this time and Magüi can reach the third round. It's the first match on court 5, from 12 h local time, 13 h in Spain. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

23/06/03: GREAT!!. Magüi has defeated Vivi in the first round by 6-3 and 7-5, so finally Magüi has been able to reach the second round after two years in a row losing in the first round in Wimbledon. The match has been really tough, because Vivi was leading 4-3 and serve in the second set, but Magüi could rebreak soon and she could even have won earlier, with some match points at 5-4 and some more at 6-5. CONGRATULATIONS!!!. Let's hope that things go well in the next round, where she'll play on Wednesday the lefty Slovenian Maja Matevzic.

22/06/03: Magüi will play tomorrow Monday against Vivi Ruano in the first round in Wimbledon. It's the fourth match on court 14 (the first match starts at 12 pm, local time, 13 h in Spain). Vivi won't be an easy rival, but let's hope that Magüi has a good start and can defeat her. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

21/06/03: Bad news. Magüi and Capriati have lost the doubles final in Eastbourne against Davenport/Raymond by 6-3 and 6-2. Anyway, a great result reaching that final. Magüi will play her first match in Wimbledon next Monday against Vivi Ruano. GOOD LUCK!!.

20/06/03: MAGÜI AND CAPRIATI IN THE DOUBLES FINAL!! :):). They have defeated Foretz/ Serra Zanetti in semifinals by 7-5 and 6-2. Tomorrow they'll play Lindsay Davenport/Lisa Raymond, seeds number 2, in the final. Let's hope that they can give a new surprise and win the tournament. GOOD LUCK!!.

20/06/03: MAGÜI HAS WON THE EASTBOURNE CUP!! :):). She has defeated the French Virginie Razzano in the final by 6-4 y 6-2. So, although things started bad for Magüi on grass, let's hope that this tournament gives her confidence for Wimbledon. ¡¡VAMOS MAGÜI!! :):)

19/06/03: We don't know what has happened, but Magüi is in the Eastbourne Cup final!. She had to play the semifinals against Morigami, who has defeated Molik, but by any reason this one has withdrawn from the tournament, so Magüi reaches tomorrow's final without playing the semifinals. Let's hope that she can win. So tomorrow Magüi plays the final of this 'alternative' tournament and the doubles semifinals. GOOD LUCK!!.

19/06/03: Magüi has defeated Foretz by 7-6 and 6-3, so she has reached the semifinals of the Eastbourne Cup. Later, Magüi and Capriati have got a great win against Likhovtseva/Sugiyama, seeds number 1, by 7-5 and 7-6 (7-3), reaching the semifinals, where they'll play tomorrow Stephanie Foretz/Antonella Serra Zanetti. 19/06/03: The doubles draw of Wimbledon is already out. Magüi and Boogie will play Asagoe/Miyagi in the first round.

19/06/03: Magüi defeated yesterday Samantha Stosur in the first round of the Eastbourne Cup by 6-2 and 6-4 and today she'll play Foretz in the second round. Later, Magüi and Capriati will play their second-round doubles match against Likhovtseva/Sugiyama.

18/06/03: In Eastbourne, besides the main tournament, there's an alternative tournament called Eastbourne Cup played by the players that have lost early in the tournament so that they can get practice on grass before Wimbledon. Magüi plays this tournament, is the seed number 2 and plays today the winner of Stosur-Pullin in the first round. Let's hope that she can do well there and get practice on grass.

17/06/03: Magüi and Capriati will play Likhovtseva/Sugiyama, first-seeded in the doubles tournament, on Thursday. Let's hope that they can win.

17/06/03: Wimbledon's draw has been published. Magüi is the seed number 24 and will play the Spaniard Virginia Ruano in the first round .

16/06/03: Magüi will be the seed number 24 at Wimbledon. The draw will be made tomorrow. Let's hope that she has a 'decent' draw and can do well.

16/06/03: Good news!!. Fortunately things went better in doubles and Magüi and Capriati have defeated Gagliardi/Shaughnessy in a close match by 7-6 (7-2) and 7-5. Let's hope that they can win in the next round.

15/06/03: Bad grass-season start for Magüi with a surprising defeat against the British wild card Amanda Janes by 7-6 (7-1) and 6-3 in the first qualifying round in Eastbourne, where Magüi was the seed number 1. A shame, but anyone can have a bad day. Let's hope that Magüi is luckier tomorrow in doubles. Magüi plays this week with Capriati. They have a wild card and they play tomorrow  Gagliardi/Shaughnessy in the first round. GOOD LUCK!!.

12/06/03: Magüi will finally play the qualifying in Eastbourne, where in principle she will be one of the seeds. The qualifying starts next Saturday. Let's hope that things go well and that she can reach the main draw. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

11/06/03: Just as curiosity, according to the statistics on the Roland Garros' website, Magüi is the third player that most aces has got during the tournament, with 18 aces in total (a shame that she could only get one in her lat match, because her aces average till there had been very good). And her fastest serve speed was 176 km/h, which is not bad at all, specially if we take into account that the serve speed is only measured in the biggest courts, and Magüi only played two matches there.

09/06/03: Magüi top 30!. After many months, and thanks to the great results in the last months, Magüi is again top 30 in the ranking published today by the WTA after the tournament in Roland Garros. Let's hope that Magüi can improve her ranking in the next weeks. Magüi will play two tournaments on grass next:  Eastbourne (where we think she must play the qualifying) and Wimbledon (third Grand Slam of the season, in which Magüi will be seeded). Let's hope that she can do well. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

06/06/03: Magüi was received yesterday by the General Director of Sports of the Canarian Government to congratulate her on her successes at the international tournaments in Estoril and Budapest. He gave her a commemorative plaque. Some pics here.

02/06/03: Sorry for the lack of news in the last days, but we were in Paris supporting Magüi ;). Magüi has had a great performance at Roland Garros, reaching the fourth round. In the first round she defeated the young Russian Maria Sharapova, in a match controlled from the start by 6-3 and 6-3. In the second round she defeated Anna Pistolesi, seed number 23, in a close match by 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3. In the third round she defeated the American Ashley Harkleroad, by 3-6, 6-1 and 6-2. After losing the first set she played at a great level in the second and third set. And yesterday she could do nothing against the French Amélie Mauresmo, seed number 5, and with many fans supporting the French (incredible) she lost by 6-1 and 6-2. In doubles, Magüi and Boogie weren't lucky and lost to Hantuchova/Rubin, seeds number 9, by 7-5 and 6-1, in a match in which Magüi and Boogie were serving to win the first set. To summarise, great tournament for Magüi, who will rest a couple of weeks (she deserves it) and will play next at <Eastbourne, on grass. GOOD LUCK!!.

23/05/03: Roland Garros' draw has been released.There hasn't been any late withdrawal among the seeds, so Magüi won't be seeded. In the first round, Magüi will play a qualifier. Let's hope that she is lucky. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

21/05/03: Well, it seems Magüi hasn't had a good day. She has lost to Mª Antonia by 6-3 and 6-2 . Later, Magüi and Molik have defeated MJ Martínez and Conchita Martínez Granados by 6-3 and 6-4. In quarterfinals they will play Grande/Widjaja tomorrow. ¡¡VAMOS!!. Added more pics of the tournament in Budapest and some of the tournament in Madrid.

20/05/03: Good news!!. Magüi has defeated Wartusch by 6-2 and 6-2 in a good match, so she has qualified for the second round, where she'll play tomorrow Mª Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo. 18/05/03: Magüi will finally play the tournament in Madrid. She's the seed number 6 and will play in the first round the Austrian Patricia Wartusch on Tuesday. Let's hope that she can doo a good tournament. In doubles, Magüi plays with Alicia Molik (like last year) and they play Mª José Martínez and Conchita Martínez Granados in the first round. 14/05/03: What a shame!. Magüi has lost to Hantuchova in a close match that has lasted 2 hours and 37 minutes by 7-6 (7-4), 1-6 and 6-4. A shame that Magüi hasn't been able to win the tiebreak in the first set and that she hasn't been able to win the third set after winning the second one, anyway, a good match for Magüi against a top 10. In principle, Magüi will play next week in Madrid. Let's hope that she does well and that it's still possible for her to be a seed at Roland Garros. ¡¡VAMOS MAGÜI!!.

13/05/03: Magüi will play tomorrow from 13 h on the Court Pallacorda against the Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, seed number 7, in the second round in Rome. According to a site with daily updated rankings, although the results have helped today, Magüi needs to defeat Hantuchova to be a seed at Roland Garros, because Magüi is currently 33rd-ranked, only two points behind the 32nd-ranked. Well, let's hope that Magüi is lucky tomorrow and continues her great clay season with a new win against a top 10. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

13/05/03: WOW!. What a win for Magüi!. :):). Magüi has defeated Likhovtseva by 4-6, 6-2 and 6-0 in the first round, and in the second round she'll play Hantuchova. Great win for Magüi, who could react to win the match after losing a close first set , so her chances of being seeded at Roland Garros are still 'alive'. ¡¡VAMOS!!.

12/05/03: Magüi will play Likhovtseva in the first round in Rome tomorrow from 13 h on Court 5. She must win today to be able to be seeded at Roland Garros, so let's hope that she can do it. ¡¡VAMOS MAGÜI!!.

11/05/03: Well, Magüi hasn't been too lucky with the draw in Rome, because she'll play on Tuesday the Russian Elena Likhovtseva in the first round, who defeated her some days ago. Anyway, the matches between Magüi and Elena have always been very close, so let's hope that this time the win is for Magüi. This week Magüi won't play doubles.
