Raaja Yayaati |
Raajaa Yayaati
Yayaati is the character of Bhaagvat Puraan but he is mentioned in Mahaabhaarat also in Krishn's reference. Yayaati was the son of Raajaa Nahush (Pururavaa's grandson). He had two wives - Devayaanee (Daitya Guru Shukraachaaraya Jee's daughter) and Sharmishthaa (Daitya Raaj Vrishparvaa's daughter). He had five sons - three from Devayaanee and two from Sharmishthaa - Yadu and Turvasu from Devayaanee; and Druhyu, Anu, Puru from Sharmishthaa. Among the five sons Yadu was the eldest in whose Vansh Krishn was born (Yaadav Vansh). From Sharmishthaa he had Druhyu, Anu and Puru on whose name Paurav Vansh continued. Thus only Yadu and Puru extended their families. Yayaati Meets Devayaanee Once he was out in the forest for preying. He got very thirsty, so he looked for a well to drink water. He found a well. That well was dry but he found a girl in that dry well. So he took her out. She was Devayaanee (see Shukraachaarya Jee for her details) - the daughter of Daitya Guru Shukraachaarya Jee. In fact Daityaraaj Vrishparvaa's daughter Sharmishthaa had pushed her in this well out of a quarrel. She didn't have any clothes on her body so Yayaati gave his own cloth to wear. Then she expressed her desire to marry him saying that "as you have taken me out of the well holding my hand, I don't want that anybody else should hold my hand". Yayaati knew that this marriage was not according to Shaastra and Dharm but he took it as his destiny and he married her. As a result of the quarrel, Devayaanee asked Raajaa Vrishparvaa that Sharmishthaa should serve her the whole life with her friends. So as Devayaanee married Yayaati, Sharmishthaa also went with her along with her friends. Shukraachaarya Jee warned Yayaati not to take Sharmishthaa to his bed. Yayaati's Married Life Now Yayaati and Devayaanee had a son, so Sharmishthaa also expressed her desire to Yayaati to have a son. Yayaati considered it according to Dharm so they also had a son. After some time Devayaanee had three sons and Sharmishthaa had two sons. When Devayaanee came to know about this she got very angry and went to her father's house. When Yayaati heard of her leaving, he also followed her. He explained the situation to Devayaanee and Shukraachaarya Jee but Shukraachaarya Jee gave him Shaap that "he should get that kind of old look in which a person looks ugly". Yayaati told him that this would affect his daughter also, so he said "OK, you can exchange your old age with somebody, if at all somebody is ready to exchange his youth with your old age". Yayaati called his all sons and asked them to give him their youth in exchange of the old age Shukraachaarya gave to him. He said to them - "One of you will have to give me youth to become a king of this kingdom." He first asked his eldest son, he replied - "Women and servants will mock me if I will look old in this young age. Ask your younger sons who are dearer to you." Then he called his second son and asked the same thing, he said - "It destroys strength and beauty and wisdom. I am not strong enough to do so." The third son said - "An old man cannot ride horse or an elephant. His speech is also falter. I am not ready for that." His fourth son begged to be forgiven from this, as an old man had to seek others help even to clean their body. Now Yayaati begged his youngest son - "You have to help me in this situation." Puru, the youngest son, said - "This is my good luck that I can be of any use of yours. I gladly give you my youth and take your old age. Be happy." Hearing this Yayaati embraced him. As he touched him he became young and his son became old. So Puru enjoyed the kingdom and Yayaati enjoyed his life and worldly pleasures for long time. When he was not satisfied yet, he went to Kuber's garden where he spent many years with a maiden Apsaraa. One day Vairaagya arose in his mind and he gave his youth back to his son, took his old age back and went to forest. His wives also went with him. First time this story is told in Mahaabhaarat. It is given in Vishnu Puraan also. Bhaagvat Puraan and Harivansh Puraan also give this story but with variations. The following version comes from Padm Puraan. According to Padm Puraan Once Indra invited Yayaati to Heaven, He sent His Saarathee Maatali to bring him. On the way they had some philosophical discussion which made such an impression on Yayaati that he could exempt his public from passion and death. After some time Yam complained that now no man was dying on Earth. Hearing this Indra sent Kaam Dev and his daughter Ashrubindumatee to excite a passion in Yayaati's breast. He got affected and he asked the youth from his sons. All his sons refused to give him their youth, but Puru. Then Puru's young wife, instigated by Indra persuaded her husband to go to Heaven and then Indra restored his youth.
