Hanumaan (12)
1. Who
is Hanumaan? Parables About Hanumaan Shaap to Hanumaan Apart from trying to snatch Sun-fruit Hanumaan used to trouble to sages and hermits. He was warned several times but he was so proud of his powers that he didn't listen to anybody. He used to tease and tickle the sages by snatching away their personal belongings, by spoiling their well arranged worship articles etc. Knowing that Hanumaan is indomitable by the blessings of Brahmaa and Indra and all the celestials, a severe punishment was uncalled for, and as he was only a simple little monkey, thereby the sages gave him a minor curse. The curse was that "Hanumaan should not remember his might on his own, but may recollect them whenever anybody else reminds him about it..". If Hanumaan were to be aware of his own might, the course of Raamaayan would have been otherwise. He would have simply enlarged his body and brought the whole Lanka island to Raam, as he lifted the whole "Sanjeevanee" mountain, to enliven Lakshman in the war with Raavan's son, Indrajeet. So this was a necessary curse upon Hanumaan. Hence Jaambvaan had to remind Hanumaan about them. Besides, if he remembered his powers, Sugreev would not have to suffer so much as he suffered. Hanumaan could have killed Baali very easily and got Sugreev's kingdom back to him. Hanumaan is the Student of Soorya The word "Kapi" also means 'Sun...'; kam=water; pi=drinker, drinker of waters... the Sun. Sun, monkey, elephant are all the meanings of Kapi. As Sun drinks waters only to give rains Hanumaan drinks Raam Ras Amrit to shower wisdom..., may it be Sugreev, Angad or Seetaa. Hanumaan is the student of a guru no less than Sun-god - He learned Shaastra from Soorya. On ascertaining that nobody is prepared to teach him scriptures, as he was a fickle monkey, he approached Sun. As Sun is an all-knowing teacher, Karm Saakshee, an eternal witness of all deeds.. Hanumaan, raised his body to solar orbit and requested Sun to accept being his teacher. In fact he was blessed by the Sun that the Sun would teach Shaastra to Hanumaan when he will be able to learn them. Sun declines saying, "I am ever on my wheels, where can I be standstill to teach you leisurely, I have my unending duty to perform..." and thus continued His solar traversal. But Hanumaan undeterred by Sun's dismissing, still enhanced his body, placing one leg on the eastern mountain range and the other on the western, and face turned toward the traveling Sun, again requested Him, saying "My face will always be towards you, in whichever orbit you go, but teach me...oh! God..." Pleased by the pertinence of Hanumaan, Sun taught all the scriptures to Hanumaan. So Hanumaan was also a witness to all the happenings in Raamaayan, like Sun, and also performed whatever duty was assigned to him. Even today any student is asked to adore Hanumaan, to obtain such a stubborn health, enduring education, and above all a reverential scholarship. Hanumaan is Still Living Hanumaan has the Var of "Ichchhaa Mrityu", means 'death at his wish...' but he is not yet dead, believably, for he is "Chiranjeevee", means 'eternal existence on earth...'. When Raam was crowned as emperor, after His exile and eliminating Raavan, Raam and Seetaa gave gifts to all of their friends. When it was the turn of Hanumaan to choose a gift, shunning the heavens or other higher planes or other things, he asked only for living in this mortal world as long as the name "Raam" is audible. Then Seetaa blessed Hanumaan with that gift saying "O Hanumaan, Wherever you are, there will be plenty of fruits and eatables, and further, in villages, public shelters, temples, houses, gardens, cowsheds, cities, and at riversides, crossroads, pilgrimages, water tanks, trunks of banyan trees, and on mountains, caves, peaks and wherever people stroll, your image will be installed, so that you can always listen to Raam's name, uttered by the people from all corners of the earth...". Thus Hanumaan is believed to be still living, as the name of Raam is still audible. He is also called an old monkey living from ages till now, which is reflected in Mahaabhaarat, when Bheem could not lift the tail of this old monkey, on his way in forests. Even today one can see huge images, statues of Hanumaan at all these places, as said by Seetaa, installed either ages ago, or recently. Hanumaan Wrote Raamaayan Another parable is told that Hanumaan is the first one to script Raamaayan on clay tablets, recording each and every detail of what Raam did. Having finished his writing he brought those clay tablets to Raam, to bless that work. Raam humbly said to Hanumaan, "I have not done anything that great to be recorded this laboriously... I have done my righteous duty...that's all..." Hanumaan got upset hearing this. Dejected by the slighting away of 'his great deeds as simple acts of duty' by Raam, Hanumaan brought those clay tablets to seashore, recited each verse, and broke each tablet on his knee and threw them into the sea. This writing is called "Hanumad Raamaayan". This work is unavailable since that time. But one tablet came to shore afloat on the sea surface, which was retrieved during the period of Mahaakavi Kalidaas, and hung at a public place to be deciphered by scholars. On that tablet only one foot of a stanza is available. That foot says "O Raavan, Those your ten heads, on which you lifted off Mount Kailaash, the abode of Shiva, are now bumped on battlefield by the claws of crows and eagles, know what has happened to your high-headed Decahedral pride, at the hands of virtue...". Kaalidaas deciphered the stanza and informed that it was from Hanumad Raamaayan, recorded by Hanumaan, but now an extinct script. And Kaalidaas saluted that clay plate for "he was fortunate enough to see at least one stanza of "Hanumad Raamaayan". It is said that none can conclusively narrate about Hanumaan, for he is many faceted. He is symbolic for unwavering dedication to righteousness, unstinting performance of entrusted duties, unfailing talents in service. So the tradition says many a parable about Hanumaan...
