Eklavya

Eklavya was the son of Hiranyadhanu, the King of Nishaad.

He was a Bheel tribe boy who wanted to be a good archer. He went to learn this to Guru Drone but Drone refused to teach him, so he built a statue of Guru Drone and used to learn archery from it. He often used to go to the place where Guru Jee used to teach archery to Arjun and other princes. He sat there and watched them for long hours. Once Guru Jee took test of his students. Arjun shot an arrow to an animal, but when they arrived at the animal, they found two arrows piercing its body. Who could be other one to shoot his body? So they went around to find someone.

After walking a little they found a boy holding a bow and arrow. Guru Jee asked - "Did you shoot this arrow?" "Yes" Guru Jee asked - "What is your name? Where did you learn this and who is your teacher?" The boy answered - "My name is Eklavya. I have learned this by practicing and My Guru is Guru Drone." Drone got surprised to hear this and said - "But I have never seen you let alone teaching." He said - "I have built your statue, I worship it daily and learn everything with the permission of that statue."

Drone found a rival archer in him against Arjun, which he did not want, so he said - "If you have been learning from me then you will have to pay me Guru Dakshinaa." Eklavya touched Drone's feet and said - "Please order me what can I do for you?" Drone cunningly said - "Give me your right thumb." The child immediately cut his right thumb from a knife and offered it to Drone as Guru Dakshinaa. Drone went away with children.

It is said that, this tribe still shoots arrows without using their right thumb.
