After Raam had left for Van, Dashrath died, so the throne could not be kept empty. Some people were sent immediately to Kaikaya Desh on fast running horses to bring Bharat soon, so that he could be crowned as king of Ayodhyaa. When Bharat and Shatrughn came they found the whole Ayodhyaa lonely, sad, without any hustle and bustle. Many kinds of bad thoughts came to their mind but didn't settle down for any. When they came to the palace, they didn't see Raajaa in his palace so they came to their Maa's palace. Seeing them coming Kaikeyee rose from her Aasan and welcomed them. Seeing her in widow's guise they both got worried. She asked them about her father's house welfare, but Bharat was eager to know about his own house welfare.

Then she said everything in detail that how she managed to have royal throne for him and said - "I made everything all right, but Bhagvaan did one thing wrong that Raajaa died." Bharat beat his head and said, "What Raajaa said at the time of his death?" Kaikeyee said - "He said "Haa Raam, Haa Lakshman"." Bharat asked - "Then where were Raam and Lakshman then?" Kaikeyee said, "They had already left for Van along with Seetaa." Bharat said in astonishment, "What? What kind of mother you are that you sent Raam and Lakshman-like sons and Seetaa-like daughter-in-law to Van?" He wanted to beat her but Shatrughn held his hand saying - "Don't beat her, Bhaiyaa Raam considered her as His own mother, so we should not beat her. He will be angry with us." 

Then they proceeded to see Kaushalyaa. Kaushalyaa also heard about Bharat's coming so she was also coming to see him. Both met on their way and wept bitterly. Bharat cleared himself that he had no participation in this conspiracy. Then Shatrughn came to know that this all was Mantharaa's mischief, so he started beating her badly, but Bharat held her hand back saying, "Do not beat a woman. Raam will not get happy with our this action."

Everybody wanted to crown Bharat as king of Ayodhyaa but Bharat refused to be the king and suggested that he would go to forest and bring Raam back. All did go there but they could not bring Him back. Kaikeyee also went along with them. Raam met her first, she was very hesitant to see Him, but Raam tried to remove all kinds of thoughts from her mind about this incident. Raajaa Janak also came to see all of them.

My Note
Although both Maanas and Raamaayan are silent on the issue of Bharat, Kaikeyee and Mantharaa, but it is believed that Bharat was so much angry with both women that he did not see them at all during the 14 years of Raam's exile. But when Raam came back, He again first met Kaikeyee and consoled her saying that "it was not her fault, it was all His own destiny, she was only the medium". He asked Bharat also to pardon his mother. Bharat had to obey Raam. Besides, Raam went to see Mantharaa also and consoled her. She was so ashamed of her action that she also did not come out of her house for 14 years.
