Chapter 1

Max couldn’t wait to surprise her boyfriend.  She hadn’t seen him in so long - he’d been on the road working.  How disappointed he had sounded on the phone when she told him she couldn’t make it up to see him this weekend.  She never got to visit him and was so caught up in her own career that she didn’t know much about his at all.  She knew what he did, and who he worked for, but that was about it.  In the six months that they had been together, never once had she seen him work or even met any of his co-workers.  She imagined the look on his face when he would see her.  It had taken a lot of begging to her boss to get the weekend off, but she managed to talk him into it.  It was hard to keep the smile off of her face as the elevator doors closed and it began its ascent to his hotel room.  Exiting the elevator, she counted the numbers on the doors until she came to his.  She took a deep breath and knocked on the door.  He didn’t answer so she knocked again.

"I’m coming!", she heard him say.

The door swung open and the color instantly drained from both of their faces.  His because he knew that he was caught and hers because the sight that filled her eyes - the blonde wrapped in only a blanket who stood on the opposite side of the room.  Max felt her stomach rising in her throat as he stumbled for words to explain.

"It’s not what you think.", he said.

Max just stared a whole right through him, her brain spinning.

"Max…baby, I can explain."

"No you can’t.", she said and turned to walk away.

"Max!  Wait!", she heard him call as her pace quickened the closer she got to the elevator.  Once inside, she pushed the button to take her to the roof.

"How could I have been so stupid.", she said to herself, tears spilling on to her cheeks as she exited the elevator.

She pushed open the door that lead to the roof top and made her way to the edge.  She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath, filling her lungs with the cool night air.  Max climbed onto the wide ledge and sat down, her feet dangling over the side of the building.  A thousand thoughts filled her mind.  She struggled to understand how he could do that to her.  He had promised her so many times that he would never cheat on her.  She should have known better, he was a man after all.  A good looking man that many woman adored.  Somewhere in the back of her mind, she always knew it would happen I guess she just didn’t want to admit it to herself.  But here she was faced with just that.  She couldn’t be with a man she couldn’t trust.  It was that simple.

She was pulled from her thoughts as she could hear the strumming of a guitar.  Where was it coming from?  She listened for a moment before she heard a the faint sound of a man singing.  The chords played over and the words repeated a couple of times.  Realizing that he must be attempting to write a song, she strained to hear it better.  Curious, she followed the sounds to the other side of the roof.  Max stood back in the shadows and watched him.  He was sitting alone, on the dark rooftop searching for the words that matched the tune.  His face intense with thought.  She wondered if he was some sort of rock star as she noticed his blue hair and oddly shaven beard.  He was a handsome man she thought.  She wondered if he cheated on HIS girlfriend.  Then she listened as he began to sing again.  This time, the words began to flow from his mouth.  He sang of heartbreak and loss.  It was a beautiful song.  Half way through, he stopped singing and ran his fingers across the strings of the guitar angrily making a loud noise.  She could tell that he was frustrated.

"Don’t stop.  It was beautiful.", Max said startling the man as she stepped out of the shadows.

The young man snapped his head around to look at her.  She shouldn’t be there, it was obvious that he was trying to be alone.

"I’m sorry.", she said and quickly walked away.

The man sat and watched her leave.  Something told him to follow her.  He didn’t know why, but he picked up his guitar and made his way through the door only to watch the elevator doors close.  He pushed the down button and waited for the next elevator.

"This is crazy.", he thought to himself as the down arrow lit up and he boarded the elevator headed to the lobby, hoping to find her.
