This is the time to highlight the contributions of Asian Canadians to Canadian society. In Manitoba, this is the first year that Asian Heritage Month will be celebrated with activities involving leaders from Asian Canadian communities. In the recent years, the number of Asian immigrants has greatly increased. In 2001, the top five countries of origin for Canadian immigrants were from China (40, 282), India (27, 899), Pakistan (15, 342), Phillipines (12, 884) and Korea (9, 613) out of the 250 000 immigrants that came to Canada. The composition of Canadian society is becoming more diverse with increasing Asian immigrants. Therefore, Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to increase public awarness and understanding of the contributions that Asian Canadians make to Canadian society.
