STRIP AND PLANK INSTALLATION

PLANK DIRECTION AND START POSITION

Plank or strip flooring must be applied perpendicular to joists (fig 1) for maximum support. Check joist direction and decide at which wall to commence (usually the most visible).

Apply floor felt parallel to joists, flush to walls (if needed mark joist position on walls, where it can be hidden). Measure out 1/2" at each end of start wall and stretch chalk line between these points, 3/4" above felt. This 1/2" allows for natural expansion across floor width.

APPLICATION

During production, pieces of flooring have been nested in box to give the most pleasant effect. Lay out 6 -7 rows of boards ahead of work position so as to mix lengths and shades; ensure that end joints are not aligned and that floor pattern is esthetically pleasing

FIRST ROW

When starring, try to use longest planks in the first row to obtain straightest line possible. Lay first row (fig. 2) with grooved edge flush to line, with first and last planks (cut to required length) tight to the perpendicular wall (wood does not expand lengthwise). Straightness of starting row will control straightness of balance of floor so be sure that planks are flush to line and fit tightly on sides and on ends. Drill holes 1/2" from the grooved edge, on 10-12" centers, nail through holes (fig. 2) with 2" finishing nails, using a nail punch to countersink the heads. Blind nail through tongue on 10-12" centers, with nails at a 45° angle. Use punch to set nails (fig. 3) without damaging edges of planks.

SECOND ROW

Use leftover piece from first row if it is long enough. Offset each row a minimum 6" from previous. Engage boards tightly together on sides and ends. Blind nail through tongue at 45° on 10 -12" centers. Use two nails on all pieces under 12" length.

RATCHET NAILER

Use a nailing machine, with a rubber mallet, driving 2" nails when clearance permits. Nail is driven on 45° angle and nail head is countersunk (fig. 4).

BALANCE OF ROWS

Continue across room laying out and choosing pieces so that ends are never in line. Tap gently together to ensure tight fit of all planks. Continue nailing on 10-12" centers using power nailer.

LAST TWO ROWS

Reverse procedure of first two rows blind nailing through tongue. Measure and cut last row leaving 1/2" space at wall. Drill holes and face-nail. Countersink all nail heads and fill with matching putty stick. Place base moldings, nailing then into wall and not into floor, thus restricting their movement.
