General description: Route 1 is a ring road around the island. It was completed in 1974. Large sections of it are still unsurfaced, as are most other roads.
Zones evolve in clockwise order around route 1, beginning with 2 in the south. Reykjavik is in zone 4, Akureyri in zone 8. Zones are strict: there is virtually no overlap except for some long main roads, like the F26 and F35 which cross through the center of the country.
Where a road goes thorugh a mountainous area, the number gets a prefix F. Together with the other national roads, these mountain roads form an integrated system.
Road signs: Indirect references to road numbers appear in a dashed rectangle (as in Finland and sometimes in Germany). Certain types of signs are blue with white text (for example above the road), others are white with blue text. Yellow with black text also occurs.
