Although family
Bible records (combined with later Census records) indicate that Milly
LeCroy was born on March 17, 1851, she appears, as Emilia, on the 1850
US Census in the household of Priestly LeCroy in Franklin Co., GA at the
age of four (4). This places her actual birth around 1846.
She was married to James A. Peek, the son of Jackson Peek and Sarah
Ann Bridges of Franklin Co., GA on April 27, 1866 in Murfreesboro,
Rutherford Co., TN. On her marriage record, she is listed as "Millia
Leroy"
Her father, Priestly LeCroy married Elizabeth Peek in Franklin Co.,
GA on February 4, 1849, but, for a number of reasons, Elizabeth Peek is
believed to be the mother of Milly as well as her sister Mary who was
born around 1848. (The fact that she was likely an illegitimate birth
helps to explain the birth year being wrong.)
One reason for this belief is her name, Emilia. The name (or
variations) is common in the Peek family (Milly had a daughter named
Emily E. Peek.). Elizabeth Peek's grandmother was Amelia Dodson, the
daughter of Hightower Dodson of Amelia Co., VA. Also, Miss Clussie
Thomas, the granddaughter of Milly, provided information that James A.
Peek and Milly LeCroy were cousins. This would be true if Elizabeth Peek
were the mother of Milly LeCroy.
Milly LeCroy Peek died on January 30, 1922 and is buried beside her
husband in an unmarked grave at Bluff Cemetery in Jackson Co., AL.
