One slight source of confusion for people in the history of Hyrule is who has the Triforce, and when. When does Ganon control the Triforce? When was the Triforce of Courage hidden? Was the Triforce ever completely owned by someone? In this article, I will attempt to write down a short history of the Triforce dealing mainly with who controlled it.

Obviously, the Triforce was created when the goddesses left the world. It was placed in the Sacred Realm for its own protection. OoT and LttP would lead one to believe that it stayed there until Ganondorf took it. However, AoL and some hints within OoT make this idea very improbable. My reasons are simple: the legends of the Triforce had to come from somewhere, the sleeping Zelda probably was pre-OoT, and Rauru mentioned original Sages sealing up the Sacred Realm. Therefore, before OoT, A group of people skilled in wizardry found the Triforce and brought it to Hyrule. It was given to the king (or it is possible the king was one of the group) who had the ability to use it. When he died, his son inherited it. But his heart was not in balance, and theTriforce split. After losing his sister (the sleeping Zelda) due to greed, grief and common sense led him to sealing the Triforce up again. The group of finders found the pieces and sealed it in the Sacred Realm. I believe that all of this happened over a period of, say, 60 - 70 years. There could not have been a dynasty of kings ruling with the Triforce; very few people can control the entire Triforce. Between the writing of the directions to the Triforce of Courage and Link III, NO ONE had the ability to control the Triforce. I don't know how long of a wait that is, but it is long. A dynasty of kings would be very improbable.

So the Triforce is resting in the Sacred Realm until OoT. Link opened the seal, but Ganondorf followed him in and grabeed the Triforce. Once again, it split. Zelda, Link, and Ganondorf each held a piece of the Triforce. Seven years later, Link, Zelda, and a new group of sages sealed Ganon, still holding the Triforce of Power, in the Sacred Realm. In his Ganon form, time had no meaning on his body. He could not die of old age. Link and Zelda, however, could and probably did. It makes since that this is when the other two pieces entered the Sacred Realm. Some time between OoT and LttP, they entered the Realm and came into Ganon's possession. Perhaps the Trifore tries to reunite after its bearers have died. Anyway, note I said under Ganon's posession, not control. Ganon was many things, but not stupid. He knew he could not control the entire Triforce, so he figured it was better if no one recieved the other two pieces. This was the state of things until LttP.

In LttP, Link II defeated Ganon and gained the Triforce. He brought it back to Hyrule, only the second time the whole Triforce was in Hyrule. But did anyone try to control it? Somewhere along the line, someone hid the Triforce of Courage, and it was probably closer to LttP than AoL. My reasons are the same as before: few people can control the Triforce. Also, if anyone could control the Triforce, the family of Impa would certainly have asked him or her to waken the sleeping Zelda. So someone, probably a sage (Sahasrahla?), the king, or Link himself hid the Triforce of Courage in the valley of Death. He then wrote a message in the ancient script, using the Book of Mudora presumably, telling of the Triforce's location, and cast a spell on Hyrule. The spell was one that would allow one who could use the Triforce to read the scroll. The Triforce of Courage was virtually forgotten over time, as the kingdom of Hyrule used the other two pieces to bring prosperity to the land.

Ganon may have been defeated, but he wasn't dead. He hid himself in Spectacle Rock until his power returned. When he felt that he and his forces were strong enough, he attacked Hyrule. He stole the Triforce of Power. Zelda split the Triforce of Wisdom into 8 pieces and hid them in labyrinths. She then sent Impa to look for one who would save the land. Ganon imprisoned the princess and Impa found Link. Link gathered up the Wisdom pieces and confronted Ganon. He killed the monster and recieved the second piece of Triforce. Not long after, he discovered that he had a birthmark on his hand in the shape of the Triforce. This was the sign that someone used to show that the person could reunite the Triforce. Link read the scroll and did, in fact, find the Triforce of Courage. He reunited the Triforce and controlled it completely, becoming only the second person in history to do so. He probably became king and used the Triforce wisely until his death. After that, who knows?
