Well, first of all, I post a lot at Hyrule.com.ar's message board, and recently a post came up about a game called Dark Cloud. It's a game that just came out in Japan for the PS2. And I have a few bones to pick with the game.

Dark Cloud, made by Sony (yes, they actually made a game!) was advertised as "The Zelda Killer." This was PS2's response to Zelda, and is supposed to knock Zelda off its pedestal. What a joke. From what I've seen, it looks like a pretty good game. It's a Zelda-esque adventure game. I'm not complaining about that. Why would I care? Rare is doing the same thing. But it's not just based on Zelda's genre, it's based on Zelda itself.

Take a quick look at that picture. Take that picture to one with only a little knowledge of video games and the person would say it's Zelda. The rip off is so blatantly obvious to anyone who has played Ocarina of Time.

Take the character himself. Look how he is dressed. The green hat alone should give it away. But that's not all. He has gauntlets too. And a strange and magical symbol on the back of his hand. That's original. The boots I can forgive, obviously. But the main character also wears tights. Kind of suspicious here, don't you think? And of course, one can't forget his face. It's Link. Got to IGN's preview and look at the titles for the images. One of them is called "It's Link." So it's not just me here.

And this scene here is despicable. Look at the map. A blatant, and I do mean blatant, rip off of Zelda. And who is he fighting? A beast? A bad guy? Or a skeleton with a sword and shield? Gee, every Zelda game has that. Come up with something original. And who can forget Z-targeting? Invented and perfected in OoT, it is used here. I guess that's forgivable, maybe. If it wasn't so blatant though. And look at the top right corner. Is that a map and compass? And what is in the top center? If that is a 3 item selction I will be upset. And note the bars on the top left. Adventures of Link used hearts and swords. Grrr...

Don't think I'm too mad. I don't have any plans of getting a PS2, so I won't be getting it. And it is kind of different. But that's not all. It copies Zelda in so many ways. And then they advertise it as the Zelda killer. Haha! That's funny. And people will buy into the hype too, saying how bad Zelda is compared to this. But I guess we get the last laugh. If I remember correctly, Famitsu rated it a 28/40. Only three games got a perfect score I believe. You know what one of them is.
