Majora's Mask has been both hailed and criticized as being radically different from main stream Zelda. A different world, different tasks, different storyline, you get the picture. Yet there was something else here. As different as it may have been, there was something else there. Something for the older gamers. Something special. Well, not just one thing. A lot of small things were throwbacks to the olden Zelda days. Some enemies, some items, some sounds, they all came from the first three games yet were missing in Ocarina of Time. These little pieces of nostalgia were enough for me, who remembers quite vividly the first three games, to nearly break out with tears of joy.

The Classic Overworld Theme- the hype over this was crazy. And for a good reason, too.  The overworld music from the first Zelda game was a really cool piece of music.  It was even covered by Nine Inch Nails!  Seriously, many people complained that it was missing in OoT, and Nintendo did the right thing by putting it into Majora's Mask.  My face broke out into a smile the first time I stepped out onto the field.  And the new version of it did not destroy the feeling at all.  It was fantastic.

Oni Link's Sword- I have not seen this yet, but it can't be bad.  This is another throwback into the glory days that people missed in Ocarina.  I am referring, of course, to the fact that when you have full power, it shoots.  Ah, the nostalgia.  I have got to see that.  Although with Z-Targeting, it is bound to make things easy.  But who cares?  It's the shooting sword!

Wizzrobe- It was just another mini boss at first.  In Snowhead, he suddenly appeared in front of me and my first reaction was "I must be near the item.  Oh good."  Like I always do, I immediately Z-Targeted to see what Tatl would say.  And when I saw that it was my old nemesis wizzrobe, well, it made me certain that I loved this game.  For those of you who don't know, wizzrobe was pretty much the hardest enemy in NES Zelda, and has appeared in all of the other games up until OoT.  And this just wasn't any enemy named Wizzrobe.  He was done quite well.  A near perfect rendition of a combination of both kinds of wizzrobes in NES Zelda.  The first time he slid across the room half invisible, my jaw hit the ground.  Perfectly done.  I was in heaven.

The Bubbles- You know the skull bubbles that roam around Ikana Canyon (and presumably elsewhere) at night?  Just like in Ocarina of Time, I thought.  Was I ever wrong.  One hit me just as I was about to climb on Epona once.  I was flashing blue.  I thought that was a glitch, and found it to be pretty neat.  It wasn't a glitch.  I got off Epona and prepared to take out my sword.  I couldn't.  Tatl told me I was jinxed.  And I of course realized what had happened.  Funny, I didn't feel jinxed.  You see, back in the NES Zelda, bubbles roamed the dungeons.  If you got hit, you couldn't take out your sword.  It ranged from mildly annoying to downright exasperating (especially in the second quest).  But to see them again in Majora's Mask was a delight.  A long forgotten remnant of Zelda has returned.  Once again, this made my day.

Bees- Sometimes when you hit a beehive, bees come out and attack you.  A nice touch for those who only know 3d Zelda.  For me, it brought a small smile.  Bees would come out of trees sometimes if you dashed into them in LttP.  Like the bubbles and Wizzrobe, the bees were nicely updated to Majora's Mask without any loss of quality.  A small thing to be sure, but nice nonetheless.

Staircases- Another small little thing.  I liked the fact that staircases were considered doorways.  As in, it was a small little cutscene when you went through them.  It gives it a little more of the old dungeon feel, with separated rooms.

Powder Keg- While it may not have appeared in any other game, it reminded me of the super bomb from Link to the Past.  Nothing much, true, but it was there.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this little trip down nostalgia lane. You must understand that as impressed as I am with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, I still adore the old games too.  And it was rather refreshing to see these things appear in Majora's Mask.  I hope the other gamers out there who have played the old games appreciated these little items.  It was enough to make this already great game seem a little more magical.
