What better way to start than with the ancient undisputed king of Zelda sites?  Not only is this one of the first two major Zelda sites in existence (this one was around since 1996), but it was also on top.  But no more.  HTLOZ toppled its reign back in early 1999, around the same time as the Ariana case (coincidence?  I think not).  Anyways, the site still gets a lot of praise, so I figure I should give my thoughts on it.

The first thing you should notice is the splash page.  "Today, on April 2nd, 2000, it's time for me to return..."  Well, 6 months later, we don't see anything.  He says they are relaunching and are taking their time.  That's great, except it's been 6 months.  Could he at least mention that they still exist?  I think the site is dead completely, but I am not sure.  After all, just look at Zlda....  Anyways, lets go on to layout.  One thing I really hate is that there are 3 different menu bars.  You can see 2 of them in the pic above, one on the top left corner and the other on the bottom.  Can't they keep them all together?  And people think Zeldapower is hard to navigate....   But anyways, it's just the layout.  The actual page is fairly nice and neat.  Sure, there's abroken (advertising?) link at the top, but what do you expect?  It's been 8 months (look at the updates).  Now then, on to the content.

Who's going to complain about this?  There's a reason ZHQ was called the largest site on the web.  If you want info on anything before Ocarina, go here.  Yes, that's right.  Very little actual info on OoT.  Of course, if you want to reminisce over the good ole anticipation days, then this is a great place to be.  Compare the pre OoT hype to the much more recent pre MM hype.  ZHQ has a huge selection on articles.  But very little game information.  Quite frankly, it's out of date.  Then again, the site is out of date.  So who's complaining?  Another thing I have a problem with is a couple of "Coming Soon" places.  In fact, one of the 5 links on the left is empty.  How silly.  The site was up for four years.  Did they forget about it?  And I'll complain about their history section.  It's a bit spare.  Heck, I have more than that.  Besides, they criticize other people's theories, saying they are probably farther from the truth than their own.  I'd bore you going into the faults with ZHQs reasoning.  I won't say mine is better, because they can't defend themselves now.  So we'll just leave it as being less than can be desired.

They also have a fairly decent fan section.  There's a good selection of older fan fics.  Of course, they are... outdated.  You seeing a pattern here?  You won't find any of the newer stuff here because the site is dead.  It's the big problem here.  Besides that, there's nothing really innovative.  Probably because it's the first site and now all this stuff is standard, but it's not very innovative.  However, it is very interactive (just not anymore).  You'll find the traditional fan fic/fan art/letters/opinions, and even a wish list, but not much else.  Too bad.

In conclusion, this site is not worth visiting anymore, unless you want to relive the old days.  Or if you want info on the first 4 games, it's pretty good.  But the site is dead.  Too bad, too.  It had some potential. On the other hand, I think it only got it's high praise for being the first and the largest.  Compared to some of the other large sites, this site doesn't have much to offer.  Even if this site does return, which I doubt, it will not be as exciting as it has been.  It's been out too long.  The king may be gone, but it's not forgotten.  At least not yet.  If you've never visited this site, you really should.  If only to see what an old Zelda site is like.  But if you have already, it's not the best.

The Good: Pre OoT Info, help for first four games, tons of stuff
The Bad: Not updated, no new info, broken links, and the like.
