I followed Nick back to his place silently admiring his Durango. When I stopped in front of his house I knew I was going to develop a pattern as I admired his home as well.
“So this is where the tall, blonde, and beautiful live. Nice place,” I said, smiling as I climbed out of my car.
“Thanks. I call it home,” he answered, coming towards me as he exited his car.
“Oh my God! Nick is that tree huge or what?” I said, spotting this beautiful old oak in his yard.
“Aren’t trees supposed to be huge?” he asked, rolling his eyes.
“Yes and the bigger the better. Go change and I’ll meet you on that branch right there,” I said, running towards the tree.
“Should I even bother asking what you are doing?” he called out after me.
“I don’t think you really need to, do you?” I answered, grinning as I reached for the first branch. I laughed as I watched him walk into his house shaking his head.
Less than ten minutes later he was walking back out in dry clothes, running a hand through his own blonde hair.
“Feel better?” I called down from the branch were I sat perched in relaxation.
“Much, thanks. How did you get up there and how do I get up there?” he asked, tilting his head back to see me.
“The old fashion way, sunshine. Didn’t you ever climb a tree as a kid?” I asked him, swinging my feet.
“Sure but that was years ago,” he answered as if that was an excuse.
“Nick, whatever life has taught you about things like this being wrong when you grow up I have to words for you. Ignore it! Now get your cute self up here. You have to see this view,” I insisted.
I watched him take a deep breath and reach for the first branch. Slowly he worked his way up till he was sitting beside me on the long thick branch of the mighty oak.
“Wow! I never realized….” He trailed off, his words hanging in the air.
“That you could see forever from a treetop,” I supplied, grinning at him.
“Well, maybe not forever,” he said, smiling.
“Yes, forever. If you look long enough you can see the world and all the magic in it. Just watch it for a moment, Nick.”
There we sat in silence just absorbing the world around us, lost in the beauty and the possibilities of it all.
“Can you see it?” I asked him a little while later.
“What?” he whispered, barely hearing me.
“Forever.”
“Forever,” he agreed.
“And best of all is that you don’t just see it, but if you hold your hand out you can feel it,” I added.
“Are you an angel?” he asked suddenly.
“Nope, better than that. I am alive,” I said, beginning to climb down.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“You owe me a boat ride,” I answered, jumping to the ground the last few feet and smiling up at him.
