Nick showed me around his house when we got back. It was beautiful and held it’s own magic. It was a definition of who he was. The boy inside the man, the man inside the boy. They balanced each other out and created this wonderful place he called home.
I grinned when I spotted his video games.
“You play much?” I asked, knowing the answer by the amount of cartridges on the floor.
“I am the king, baby. No one beats me,” he gloated, smiling as he puffed up his chest.
“That’s because you haven’t played against me yet,” I challenged.
“Oh, so you think you can beat the master. Bow down, wench as you eat my dirt,” he said, sitting down at the video game.
Laughing I curled my legs beneath me as I sat down next to him. A few moments later we were wrapped up in a game. So much so that we completely forgot about dinner for hours.
The sun had long since set and our stomachs had begun to growl when finally I conceded defeat.
“All right you win,” I yelled, laughing as I dropped my controller.
“All hail the conquering king,” he teased, puffing out his chest again.
Rising to my knees, I began to bow before him. “All hail the king, all hail the king,” I chanted, trying terribly not to laugh at the picture I knew I presented.
“Good. Now kiss me wench,” he commanded.
“Oh, yuck. Do I have to?” I asked, wrinkling my nose as I looked at him.
“By order of the king,” he answered, a tiny hint of a smile touching his perfect lips.
Smiling gently, I raised up and brushed his lips softly with mine before standing up. “Now no more till you feed me.”
“Oh blackmail. Hold the kisses over my head for food. So that’s how you are going to be,” he joked, standing and leading me to the kitchen.
“Well it seems to be the only way to get you to feed me,” I shot back, smiling as I pulled myself up to sit on his counter. “So what are you making?”
“Dinner,” he answered with a boyish grin.
I watched him move around his kitchen with comfort and ease. This was his home, the place where he shed all masks and was completely himself. He sang softly as he worked and old song I couldn’t place in my head at first. So I listened and watched, not speaking or moving, but simply enjoying the sight of his comfort and freedom.
Then suddenly the song came to me and I found myself beginning to sing with him. Softly at first until my voice rose and mingled with his. Such a beautiful song, not because of the voices but because of the emotion.
So now I come to you
With open arms
Nothing to hide
Believe what I say
So here I am
With open arms
Hoping you’ll see
What your love means to me
Open arms
