I'll Protect You

Chapter 10

My hands moved back and forth across Brian’s shoulders till he was limp between my legs. I must have been lost in the moment, in the feel of his body beneath my hands, but I did something that was crazy and stupid.

Slowly, I let my hands slip over his shoulders and work their way down across his chest. I racked my nails gently over him and lost myself in the sound of his moaning in pleasure. The movement was slow and erotic and had I been another woman with another man it would have been the beginning of something sensual and beautiful.

I was Ryder Taggert though and he was Brian Littrell and in the room next door was the woman he was going to marry. I got a painful reminder of that.

“Oh, Leighanne,” he moaned.

“Oh my God,” I whispered, dropping my hands. “I’m sorry. Oh my God, I’m so sorry.”

I struggled up over the back of the sofa, getting caught in the pillows and cushions before falling free. I jumped to my feet and looked down at Brian on the floor. He looked shocked and ashamed and humiliated. And all I could think about was it was my fault.

“I didn’t mean… This wasn’t supposed to… Brian, I’m… Oh shit,” I whispered, running out of the room and back to the bedroom Brian had given me.

I grabbed my bags and headed back towards the front door. Brian stepped out of the living room and directly in front of my path.

“Where are you going?” he asked, struggling to get his shirt back on.

“Home. You don’t need me here. I’m just trouble,” I answered.

“You signed a contract,” he reminded me.

“And I’ll keep my job as long as you want me to, but I can’t stay here and the truth is, Brian, you don’t need me here. I’m going to cause more problems then you can handle if I stay here. Problems for you and Leighanne. Move, Brian,” I ordered.

“Ryder, what happened in there,” he began but I shook my head, cutting him off.

“Nothing happened in there. Nothing, do you hear me? I forgot it and you should forget it. I’m sorry and now I’m leaving.” I moved to step around him but he blocked me again.

“I can’t forget what just happened in there, Ryder. It was too intense,” he said, stepping closer to me.

“No,” I ordered, then I bolted for the door.

I was stupid and foolish and cruel. God, what had I done? Not just to myself but to Brian and Leighanne. Those few moments were a lifetime of damage.
