I walked into the kitchen merely to get another soda from the refrigerator. When I turned around Brian was standing just a few feet away from me.
“What have I told you about sneaking up on women, handsome?” I teased, trying to step around him.
“You said never grab them. You never told me not to corner them,” he said, stepping towards me. I moved back on instinct until I ran into the wall.
“What are you doing, Brian?” I demanded, hating the pleading tone in my voice. I did not beg for anyone or anything.
“Trying to get you to talk to me. It’s like you have this wall up all the sudden and I can’t get near you. Not even in conversation. You ignore every attempt I make,” he answered, stepping even closer.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I guess I just got caught up in the day. Where’s Sasha?” I asked, suddenly realizing that the little girl who had been by his side all afternoon was no where to be seen.
“Kev’s giving her a piggy back ride. She’s safe with him.”
“I don’t doubt her safety.”
“Just your own?” he asked, taking another step towards me.
“I fear no one,” I defended, standing a little straighter.
“But me. I scare you,” he corrected.
“No, you don’t,” I argued even as he stepped a little closer. His body was almost touching mine by then.
“Then you fear your reaction to me. I see it in your eyes, Ryder. Those beautiful green eyes of yours,” he whispered, closing the tiny gap between us so his body pressed against mine. “I’ve never seen eyes like yours. It’s like you can see into my soul.”
“Brian,” I begged as his hand came up to caress my face.
“I thought about you all night last night, the way your hands felt on my body.” His hand slid down my face and against my neck, the motion sensual and erotic.
I closed my eyes to the sensation, to the simple feel of his hands on my body. I wanted him, his smile, his body, his laughter, and his heart. I wanted all of him, not for a stolen moment or a forbidden night. I wanted him forever.
“What the hell are you doing?”
I jumped at the sound of Kevin’s voice and felt something deep down inside of me twist and die in the horror and pain of the moment.
I shoved Brian away from me with all my strength and bolted for the kitchen door. In the backyard I headed straight for Sasha, scooping her up where she sat next to Kristen.
“Ladies, I need to get this little girl home to her daddy. He’s expecting us soon. Kristen, it was great to meet you. Leigh, I’ll see you tomorrow,” and with those words I beat a hasty retreat.
I slipped out the back gate just in time to see Brian appear in the backdoor. From there I ran to the car, Sasha laughing, as she believed it was an attempt to make her smile. I had her in the car seat and was about to pull away when Kevin walked out in front of my car.
Slowly, he moved around till he stood next to my window. He leaned down and his green eyes met mine.
“We need to talk. Meet me at CityWalk in two hours,” and with that he turned and walked away.
“Oh, Sasha. What has Ry done now?” I moaned, starting the car and pulling away.
