“Sam, honey I have to run. Sasha’s asleep so I’m leaving her on the sofa. I’ll call you later,” I called out and turned toward the door.
“Freeze!”
Damn it, I thought as I turned around to look at the man who fathered the angel asleep on the sofa.
Sam Fisher walked out of his kitchen trying his hands on a towel with that ever constant “you can run but you can’t hide” look he wore. He could read my mind sometimes. Hell, he could read my mind all the time. He must have gotten it from Michelle because she used to be able to do the same thing.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Not much. I just took a job that has led me to the threshold of breaking up a beautiful relationship because the man can’t keep his hands off of me or my hands off of him,” I answered as if it was an every day thing.
“What did you do?”
“I think I’m falling in love with a man who is getting married in a couple of months,” I moaned, running my hand down my face.
“What did he do?” Sam asked, his voice calm and unwavering as he walked me into the kitchen so we didn’t wake Sasha.
“Reacted to my unintentional come ons. I can not believe I am acting like this, Sam!”
“So where are you running off to?”
“His cousin caught us in his kitchen and wants to talk to me. I think he wants to give me hell so I want a little while to prepare,” I answered, shaking my head sadly at what I knew was about to come.
“Why don’t you call me when you leave him? Deal?” he asked, putting his arm around me.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone, Sam,” I answered, my head buried in his shoulder like his daughter’s had been buried in my just a little while ago.
“Who says you are hurting anyone?”
“He’s getting married, Sam. If I screw around with him someone is going to get hurt and it’s going to be more than just I am. I don’t want that, Sam. This woman he’s engaged to, she’s great. Beautiful, funny, sweet, intelligent. She’s amazing and she’s perfect for him. I don’t want to be responsible for tearing that apart.”
“What’s meant to be will be, Ryder. Now go see your friend and I’ll be waiting for your call.”
At the appointed time I was waiting outside the clubs of CityWalk for Kevin. I had changed and fixed my hair in an attempt to appear as the confident secure woman people expected and not the nervous wreck I felt like.
The people mingled around me, happy, drinking, dancing. They were having the time of their lives, oblivious to the turmoil that was churning in mine.
“Looking to pick up someone else’s fiancé?” Kevin asked from behind me.
His words stung as I turned to look up at him. “I deserved that,” I answered, looking up into his angry face.
“What the hell where you doing in there, Ryder?”
