I'll Protect You

Chapter 17

“What I was doing, Kevin, was trying to keep your cousin from ruining the best thing in his life,” I shot back, suddenly angry.

I hadn’t backed myself into that corner. I hadn’t touched myself. I hadn’t been alone in that room. Brian had been there and it was time to give Brian some of the blame.

“Brian would never have thought of doing that before you,” Kevin answered.

I stared at him in disbelief for a moment. “You have to be kidding me,” screaming, drawing too much attention to us as people stopped to look at me. “You mean he’s been faithful to Leighanne from day one? I don’t think so, Kevin. I’ve been in the business long enough to know better. Men in your position have no idea what it is like to be faithful to the women in your life.”

“Be quiet, Ryder. You’re going to get me recognized,” he warned trying to hush me. His eyes darted around the crowd hoping that someone didn’t know his face so that he would be mobbed. He, like his cousin earlier, had made the mistake of going on in public without any security. Stupidity must fun in their family.

“Screw you, Kevin. I’m not taking the blame for this. All right last night was all me. I got carried away and I screwed up. Tonight was all Brian though. It was Brian first last and only Brian. I don’t give a damn if every woman out here mobs you. You aren’t my responsibility, but your cousin is and damn it I am doing my job. I didn’t ask for this, in fact I am trying my damnedest to stop it. Don’t you ever, ever presume to judge me or my actions. You have no idea who I am or what was even going on in that kitchen. You have a problem with what you saw then you take it up with your cousin. He has a problem understanding when a woman says no,” I yelled.

Oh my God! My head was screaming. This could cost me my job, my career. Shit! I could ruin Brian and Leighanne and by flipping out on Kevin I could lose my entire life.

Spinning on my heel, I tried to walk away from him with the little bit of dignity I had left. It wasn’t much I realized noting the people who had stopped to stare at me as if the collapse of my life was a fascinating movie.

“Ryder, stop,” Kevin called just as his hand settled on my arm.

I don’t know what really happened after that. I think I panicked in my state of confusion because the next thing I knew I had punched Kevin. He fell back, landing flat on his ass as I stared down at him in horror. He looked up at me, clutching his face in pain.

“What the hell was that for?” he demanded.
