I'll Protect You

Chapter 2

I stared at the man millions adored and worshipped and the only words that came to mind were “Son of a bitch.”

“Excuse me?” he asked, staring up at me from his place on the ground.

“Not you,” I answered. “Well, yeah it is you. What the hell is wrong with you? Don’t you know never to grab a woman like that?” I demanded, holding my hand out to him to help him up.

“I’m sorry. I just wanted to catch you and let you know you left your headlights on,” he answered, pulling himself up with my offered hand.

I looked back at my jeep and found myself once again groaning when I saw my headlights still on.

“Son of a bitch,” I mumbled again.

“Excuse me?” he repeated, staring at me.

“Hell of a first impression, don’t you think?” I asked, grinning for the first time as I headed back to my jeep.

“Got to admit that it’s not every day I get attacked for helping someone out,” he admitted and I heard the faint ring of his laughter chase after me.

“I didn’t attack you. You attacked me. Or at least you gave me the impression you were going to attack me,” I argued, turning off my lights.

“Maybe you’re just paranoid,” he suggested.

“No, I am well trained. There’s a difference,” I pointed out.

“Trained for what?”

“I’m a bodyguard. Actually I am you’re new bodyguard. Ryder Taggert,” I introduced, offering him my hand once again to shake.

“You’re Ryder Taggert?” he repeated.

“Last time I checked. I could be wrong though,” I teased, laughing at the short blonde whose body and life I was considering guarding.

“You’re a woman though,” he added.

“Oh my God! Are you serious? Damn it! Why didn’t anyone else tell me?” I demanded, staring at the guy like he was telling me something I had never known before.

“I’m sorry. It’s just that-“

“You’ve never seen a female bodyguard before. Yes, I know. I hear that a lot. Amazing, isn’t it? Let me ask you something, Mr. Littrell. Where is Tom?”

“Tom has life outside of the BSB. I don’t want him giving up time with his family just because of what’s going on,” he answered, referring to his normal bodyguard.

“And just what is going on?” I asked as we once again headed toward the entrance of the building.

“I’ve just been getting a series of threats from a large amount of the fans about my current relationship status and The Firm and Jive are a little worried.”

“Do you mind if I ask what your current relationship status is?” I questioned.

“I’m getting married.”
