I sat alone at the kitchen table for the longest time after we hung up. I let my thoughts drift freely through my head. I was looking for answers to questions that seemed so hard to understand.
Brian and Leighanne. They had seemed so in love the first time I saw them together. Wrapped up in each other as if life didn’t exist outside the beating of their hearts. They were true love, the very image of an emotion millions searched for their whole lives. Perfection. Barbie and Ken.
So if they were so perfect why was Brian sleeping in my bed and Leighanne in someone else’s? Why were they apart and sharing their hearts with others if they belonged together so much? Did Brian have any idea? Did Leighanne have any idea? How had she kept this quiet for so long? And why would they hurt each other so much.
I was twirling a pen in my hand when I heard something outside. Slowly, I crept from the kitchen to the door and made my way outside. I wasn’t dressed to face a stalker but I couldn’t waste time dressing and take the chance of them getting away.
Quietly, I moved around the edge of the house. My eyes searched the inky blackness of the Florida night in search of someone or something that stalked the house and the man inside.
I rounded the corner to the back of the house and saw the figure perched outside the window of the room where Brian slept inside. Without hesitation, I jumped, grabbing the mysterious shadow and forcing it to the ground. We fought for a few more moments, tearing about bushes and grass until I had control of the situation.
“Who are you?” I demanded, holding an arm twisted behind his back as I straddled him where he lay face first in the ground. My robe had fallen open and was hiked up my thighs but I wasn’t worried about exposing myself. All I cared about was keeping Brian safe.
“Get the hell of me,” he yelled, still struggling.
“Who the hell are you?” I repeated, giving his arm a tug to cease his struggles. He cried out and stilled somewhat even as he continued to tug his arm in a feeble attempt to escape.
“Ray, Ray Thomas,” he forced out.
Ray Thomas? The name rang no bells in my mind criminally or otherwise. He wasn’t anyone Brian had mentioned to me before and I didn’t recall ever seeing his name in any of my files.
“And why the hell are you outside of Brian Littrell’s house at four o’clock in the morning?” I urged.
“Because.”
I hate it when the bad guys give me attitude like it’s my fault they got busted for breaking the law. Hello! Don’t you people know it’s illegal to stalk someone? Is it my fault you are breaking the law? I don’t think so.
“Because why?” I asked, tugging his arm again to force an answer.
“Because I wanted to see if you two were sleeping together,” he yelled, wincing in pain as he again tried to pull his arm free from my grasp. He wasn’t going anywhere until I let him up though.
“Why?”
“So I could tell Leigh and she would leave the bastard and come home to me,” he answered. “The threats I’ve been sending haven’t worked so I needed something else.
“What?”
I looked up at the sound of Brian’s voice and saw him staring down at the man on the ground in confusion and pain. I felt my heart breaking as I saw the look of absolute devastation in his eyes. He had been betrayed by the woman that he trusted most. Both in his heart and in his very life.
