Marita--Around The World
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
MY STORY:  I was told my name came from a battleship in a novel my maternal Grandmother was reading the day I was born. She sent a telegram to my Mother which stated simply "Name her "Marita".
HERE ARE STORIES RECEIVED SO FAR--
MARITA G. VILORIA:  My paternal grandmother who died at a good age of 97 in 1993 was named Maria Calixta. I was named after her. Marita, is a short form of Maria Calixta.  Claixta, my aunt explained refers to the chalice-cup from which the priest drinks.  Marita could also be little Mary.  Mar is the Spanich for sea.   Anyway, I am a Filipina, born and raised in the Philippine Islands.
MARITA DECKER:  I am named Marita Carroll Decker Zadina.  My maternal gradmother was Mary Carroll, and I am called Marita, meaning little Mary in Spanish, to be her namesake.  interestingly enough, she and I have extremely similar facial features, and no one else in my family looks like us.  So, my question always has been, did I grow into my name(sake), or was there some way my mother was inspired to pick the appropriate child (of 5) to name after her Mom. Very Interesting.  I work in the area of adult learning and multimedia software development.
MARITA HOOD:  My mother was naming me, after a family friend. Little did she know she misspelled it.  I have tried to find out more about our name also.  Do you find that people do not know how to say, Marita.  I get called everything. I got an e-mail from this girl from Sweden, she said that, Marita, was a common name there.  That is all I know.
MARITA BRYANT:  Marita is a German name (as far as I know) that is a diminutive of Margarete, but a name in its own right.  There is a song from the late 1920's/early 1930's by a singing group called the Commediene Harmonists: "Mein Herz ruft immer nur nach Dir, O Marita" (My heart calls out to you alone, oh Marita), which I suspect my mother heard as a young child.  She was from Berlin, Germany and I actually met another Marita when I lived there.  A friend of my brothers' named one of his daughters after me so there are now at least 2 of us in Maine.
MARITA LYNN BARNES WHITE:   This is so neat!!! We have our own club going here (very elite too!!).  I'm a 36 years young Marita, currently living in Plano, Texas. I am single (probably not for long though) no kids, except for my four legged kid (11years young schnauzer named Oreo).  And this is how I came to be graced with my wonderful name.  My grandmother named me!!! She heard the name on the radio and asked my dad to name me it.  As a kid I HATED the name. . .the kids made fun of it and no one could pronounce it and some still have a hard time.  I now work in customer service for an international company. People are always asking me to repeat and/or spell my name, they will then say "Wow, that's different!!!I like that!!!".  Several people have talked about naming a daughter after me, but none yet.
MARITA RIEBSCHLAGER: It's so cool to see other people that have the name Marita...Growing up I thought I was the only one in the world with that name...Now it seems like Maritas keep popping up everywhere...Here is my story about how I got my name...I was named after a family friend of my Grandmother's whose name was Mary Rita and for short everyone called her Marita so...That's how I got my name...My father hated it but my mother insisted on naming me that...I hated the name growing up...because no one could pronounce it...people always ask me if I'm Hispanic because of my name but it seems like it is more of a German name than a Spanish name.
