Threadheads Charity Quilt Event scheduled for September 23, 1998

We will be making 36"x36" quilts to donate to Kaiser premature baby center.

Bring for donation: (note- don’t worry if you don’t have some of these, many of us have extra we can donate, you don’t need to buy any of this to participate)

  • 36 – 4 or 5 or 6" squares suitable for baby quilt. Bring more if you can. These can be all the same, all different, plain squares or pieced squares. We will be mix-n-matching everyone’s squares to make the quilt tops. 6" is the preferred size but we can easily accommodate the other sizes.
  • At least 4 strips measuring 2" by 38" for quilt borders
  • any quilt batting measuring at least 38" x 38" that you can donate
  • fabric you can donate (if you have any) for quilt backing
  • thread appropriate for piecing and/or machine quilting these quilts

Bring general sewing supplies. (Including safety pins for sandwiching)

There will be several stations for production of these baby quilts. At least one station will be needed for each of these functions:

Piecing – There are several options, a few of which are listed. The important thing is to end up with a 36"x36" quilt top. Some options are:

  1. Sew 6 rows of 6 – 6" squares together. Add border strips and trim to 36" square.
  2. Sew 8 rows of 8 –5" squares together. No border should be required.
  3. Sew 10 rows of 10 – 4" squares together. Add border strips and trim to 36" square.

Backing, Batting, sandwiching – Cut backing & batting, prepare backing, batting, top sandwich (note: since the quilts will be turned the order for layering is batting, backing (face up), quilt top (face down).

Turning– Sew & turn the quilts. Close opening for turning with machine stitching.

Basting - Pin in preparation for quilting or machine tying.

Quilting or tying - Machine quilt or machine tie (tack)
