Smorgasbord of Book Reports

Metacognition Journal: Keep a journal while you read your novel. Your journal should contain  entries that show mental interaction with the book. You could discuss how you feel about certain developments in the book. You could vent about a character's actions. You could praise the author's technique. The sky is the limit. To receive credit for this assignment, your journal must be kept while you read your novel, must show serious involvement with the book, and, above all, must not be a summary.  Your last journal entry should be about the end of the book.

Trial Attorney: You are a prosecuting attorney putting one of the characters from the book you read on trial for a crime or misdeed. Prepare your case on paper, giving all your arguments and supporting them with facts from the book.  If you read the same book as another student, the other person could be the defense attorney. In that case, the same rules apply. You will defend the same character. Prepare your defense on paper, giving all your arguments and supporting them with facts from the book. Both assignments are essentially persuasive writing.

Get into Your Character's Head: Pick a local/national issue. Compose a speech to be given on that topic by one of the major characters in the book you read. Be sure the contents of the speech reflect the character's personality and beliefs.

Grading: Each book report will be graded on the following:

1. Writing Rubric
2. Effort
3. Creativity
