Writing a Review

Some Points to Ponder...

Before you write your book review, you might try reading a variety of book reviews. We will read and discuss some together in class. A good book review might contain the following:

Ø     A plot summary that doesn't reveal too much (i.e., the ending) and tells just enough for a reader to decide if it is the kind of book he or she likes; the "summary" should be an invitation of things to come

Ø     Quotes from the book that reveal character, plot, or theme

Ø     A brief description of the main character(s)

Ø     Where and when the story is set (setting)

Ø     What genre it is

Ø     Description of the author's accomplishments (e.g., realistic details, fast pace, hopeful endings, humor, etc.)

Ø     A description of the problem or theme

Ø     A suggestion of who would like the book and why

Ø     Comparisons to other books and genres

Ø     What's unique about this book

Ø     Comments about the author's style or use of language, metaphors, etc.

Ø A grabbing lead and emphatic conclusion
