Fetish Fashion - Larry Utley Unleashes the Beauty and Sexuality Bound into a Corset. Last Christmas, I called my
sister to ask about possible gifts for her husband. She immediately said, “I
know what he’d love: The book on corsets that Dara is in.” Unfortunately,
I ran into two obstacles to buying the book for Rob. First off, Dara is
in the book, and I suspect that giving one’s brother-in-law half-naked photos
of one’s significant other is Not A Good Idea. More importantly, though, at
the time the book still wasn’t published. True, I had been raving about it
incessantly, but only because I was able to flip through the photographer’s
dummy over Thanksgiving dinner: 120 loose, slightly gravy-stained pages, tucked
inside a binder. Happily, the wait is finally over: Larry Utley’s Fetish
Fashion: Undressing the Corset was released last month by Green Candy Press
— just in time for Rob’s birthday. While I’m still not sure it’s an
appropriate gift within my family, this collection deserves a place on the
bookshelf or coffee table of discerning fetish and BDSM fans, admirers of erotic
photography, or plain old pervs with good taste everywhere. As anyone
who’s recently browsed the magazine section at Safeway or channel-surfed past
MTV or E! already knows, corsets are this year’s big fashion news. The past
few months alone have seen the publication of two hefty illustrated tomes: Leigh
Summer’s Bound to Please: A History of the Victorian Corset and Valerie
Steele’s The Corset: A Cultural History. Against such heavyweights —
the latter published by Yale University Press, no less — what could Utley’s
nearly wordless photo study have left to offer? Quite a bit, it turns out. First
of all, these are working corsets that one finds in Fetish Fashion.
Utley didn’t indiscriminately wrap a few fashion models in samples cadged from
publicity-hungry designers. Without exception, his models dress in corsets from
their own wardrobes — often the same outfits Utley found them wearing during
his nocturnal travels through Bay Area night clubs, fetish events, and sex
parties. These clearly are women (and a few men) who can dance, fuck, fight, or
run after a late-night cab, all while cinched to a 14″ waist. Second,
this ain’t Victoria’s Secret — unless her secret is that she’s been
doing body lines of ketamine off the firm, naked thighs of identical twin
sisters. Many of the models are denizens of the rave/goth, performance, or
sexwork underworlds, and they look it: Outrageously garbed and made up; hair in
bright candy colors; proudly shaved, pierced, or tattooed... and always
positively dripping with sexuality. Accordingly, Utley foregoes the soft
lighting and Vaseline-smeared lenses synonymous with ‘romantic’ lingerie
photography in favor of the immediacy of the digital image. Models lean
precariously, held erect by sheer force of will or whalebone. Here, one bursts
through the picture frame as if to accost the reader; over there, another slinks
across the page in stop-action, muscles rippling beneath her leather catsuit. (And
look closely: As an added filip, the image on each left-hand page slyly plays
off against the right-hand one.) But what most sets the photographs in Fetish
Fashion apart is that they look like everyone is having way too much fun.
Here you’ll find none of the aloof, sculptural ice maidens who seemingly
populate most other fetish collections. (It’s as if Utley forgot to tell them
that, these days, ‘fetish’ and ‘sex’ are often mutually exclusive.) Even
when his models are turned away from the camera, you’re certain they know
you’re looking at them. And you’re certain they like it. Quibbles?
A few. Some of the plates seem a bit subdued, lacking the jewel-like quality I
remember from the dummy. Likewise, some of the models seem a bit subdued,
offering up ‘steamy’ when I suspect they’re capable of ‘smoldering,’
at the least – quite possibly even ‘blazing.’ Here’s hoping Utley has
the opportunity soon to shoot a work of pure erotica, unbound by the constraints
of fashion, where he might explore more fully the deep currents of sexuality he
manages to tap into here. Now that would be a book for my

“If it has anything to do with sex in this city, Spectator magazine is on top of it, and its take is a hell of a lot more insightful and adventurous than Carrie Bradshaw could ever dream of, even if she weren't a fictional
character. Spectator, the magazine that is three parts perv and two parts informed intellectual, is once again this year's readers' pick.”

Alphabet Lounge in New York's East Village. On the first Sunday of each month, the fetish elite join curious newcomers in a semi-benign atmosphere of playful -sometimes painful- exploration of a different fetish. I knew there was a good reason for
dutifully documenting every devilish detail over the last three years...the resulting body of work covers a wide range of fetishes and is a unique, panoramic view of the fetish/SM scene in downtown Manhattan. To the uninitiated,
it might look like a bizarre freak show; to those with an acknowledged fetish, a celebration of uninhibited, consensual fun. Look for the book to be published early 2004. - Markie Post Dominatrix Fashion Style - New York's premier designer
of elegant and
provocative latex fashions. She views her designs as beyond fashion or fetish attire, and believes they are "the perfect antidote for excess conventionalism". In her lifetime
dedication to the expression of the individual through clothing, The Baroness has evolved as a renowned designer, fetish expert, performer, writer, and lecturer. She is currently writing a book with the working title: "Taking
Control; the Art of Female Dominance".
From early childhood The Baroness was destined to pursue a life of fashion. At the age of ten, inspired to action by the glamour and pageantry of Busby Berkeley musical extravaganzas, she borrowed a sewing machine and, in one afternoon, made a jacket and a too-tight skirt. At 13 she was arrested for making American flag
shirts, on which she had painstakingly painted the stars and stripes -
>The True Story of The Baroness
In the era of the female power suit, the late 70's and early 80's, The Baroness was designing lingerie. Her company, Varx, produced a unique line inspired by Neo
60's, punk, and Victorian fashions. Her designs and inspired use of fabrics earned her recognition as one of the New Breed by BF/IA and Dupont who referred
to her creations as "wearable works of art". Her exotic fashion shows were performed at the trend-setting Mudd Club and The Ritz.
In 1983, for the cover of Time magazineshe built a kimono that now hangs in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. At about this time she was
lured to the fantasy world of Broadway and Hollywood where she worked with the likes of Merchant-Ivory, Madonna, Jack Nicholson and Paul Newman using her
skills to create illusion and enhance character through clothing.
A decision to leave the film world and spend more time in New York City meant more time for her new passion, latex. Her penchant for the exotic and years of
experimenting with unusual materials like plastic, vinyl and PVC led her quite naturally to this truly sensual material. The inception of The Baroness
formalized her obsession and introduced her to the public where she enjoys celebrity status as a designer, multimedia performer, spokesperson and lecturer.
Now widely known as a popular public speaker on the subjects of clothing, power, and fetishes, The Baroness was a spokesperson for
the first "Erotica USA", held in New York, where she was interviewed by dozens of newspapers, magazines, radio & TV stations.
