The notable improvement in these lifter is
obviously the elimination of charge leakage on the corona wire support by
replacing balsa with polystyrene supports. There is also an increase in
rigidity as well as reduced weight. but to be honest, I experienced some
difficulties winding the wire around the polystyrene. I solved this
problem by applying thin double adhesive tape near the top of the polystyrene.
Also, arcing is indeed a terrible problem with the polystyrene. Arcs can
vaporize the supports in one burst as well as vaporize the fun and excitment.
But the good news is, I have made a design of a burn-proof lifter that can
literally endure a few seconds of arcing before the corona wire melts - enough
time to pull the plug and save the lifter and the fun! Link to this burn-proof
