Comments to the Ratinglist (04-FEB-1996)

Chairman of the SSDF

It's only four weeks since the last rating list, but with 688 new games we can present a new updated version. About 65% of these games have been played automatically with Donninger's AUTO232-program and the rest have been played manually. Seven testers have supervised the automatic transfer of moves between PC-programs, whereas fourteen members have moved the pieces themselves.

One of the motives for participating in the testing of chess programs, is the hope that it's still possible for the programmers to make them stronger. At the same time you are aware of, that some day we might reach an upper limit above which only faster hardware can increase the playing strength.

I don't know if we have reached that limit yet, but it seems to be much harder to gain those much wanted extra rating points these days, at least at Pentium 90 MHz. Genius 4.0 P90 is still ten points behind Genius 3.0 and Rebel 7.0 P90 has only three points more than its predecessor. OK, Marty Hirsch succeeded to make MChess Pro 5.0 65 and 45 points better on the two different hardwares, but he started from a lower level than the other two. MChess Pro 5.0 P90 has reached and kept the first place of the list, but only with a margin of nine points above the leader from the last season.

During the last month it was Mark Uniacke's turn to show what he had done with his program Hiarcs during the last year. Although he is a spare time chess programmer, the large improvements with his former program versions and initial good reports from England gave some hope for a significant improvement.

I'm sorry to say that so far we haven't seen any signs of increased playing strength. After 281 games Hiarcs 4.0 Pentium 90 MHz has a rating of 2379, which is 18 points less than Hiarcs 3.0 P90 has. With more games it's possible that the new version comes ahead of the older, but then only with a few points.

Another new entrant is Genius 4.0 486/50-66 MHz, which possibly is the last program that we will play with on this "old" hardware. Here Richard Lang's program has 2378, which is 14 points up compared to Genius 3.0. It's also the highest rated program on 486, one point ahead of MChess Pro 5.0! So far we have only played 137 games, so the figures could easily change with 200-300 more games.

There has been some discussion concerning to what extent the opening book of MChess Pro 5.0 has contributed to it's rating. Since adjustments against the Genius-programs most often have been mentioned, we made a list where all the 122 games played by MChess Pro 5.0 P90 against Richard Lang's programs had been excluded. With the remaining 427 games the rating fell, but only with nine points.

In a few days we will start to play with the danish program Gandalf 2.1 on Pentium 90 MHz. Although it isn't expected to reach the highest levels on the list, we are very interested to see how strong the only commercially available Scandinavian chess program is.

Chris Whittington has promised to send us his program Chess System Tal, and until next list in the beginning of March, we hope to find out how it compares to his former program Complete Chess System.
