Comments to the Ratinglist (02-MAR-1996)

Although our resources for testing new chess programs has increased during the last year, they are certainly not unlimited. We cannot play with all commercially available programs. Our policy has been to spend most of our time on the PC-programs that we believe are the strongest. The goal is to play at least about 400-500 games in order to get a reasonably high accuracy of the rating figures. We prefer to have fewer programs with lower margins of error than the reverse situation.

During the rest of 1996 we will only play with new programs on Pentium 90 MHz, and not on the 486. Most of the testers with 486-PCs have upgraded to Pentiums. Giving up the playing on two different hardwares, gives us increased capacity and an opportunity to play also with programs which are not among the very best.

One such program is Gandalf, which is made by the Dane Steen Suurballe. Gandalf made it's first appearance on the chess computer scene in Munich November 1993. It started with some surprising gains and ended up with 3,5 out of 9 points. The program is now for sale and we have played 105 games with Gandalf 2.1 Pentium 90 MHz. The rating so far is 2061, with a margin of error of 85. The playing strength is certainly much lower than what we have been used to, but I would personally be very proud if I had managed to write a program that played as good as Gandalf! We will continue to play at least 60 more games until the next list.

The changes in the top of the list have been rather small. Hiarcs 4.0 P90 has gained ten points and is now only three points behind Hiarcs 3.0 P90. Genius 4.0 is still about ten points behind Genius 3.0 on Pentium 90 MHz. On 486/50-66 MHz Genius 4.0 is leading with 21 points. Rebel 7.0 P90 has two points more than Rebel 6.0, but on 486 Rebel 7.0 has 47 points more. MChess Pro 5.0 continues to hold the first place of the list.

The next list will appear in six or seven weeks. At the moment it isn't entirely clear which new programs that will be included on the next list, but we hope to add one or two more until then.
