Chairman of the SSDF
Six weeks ago I concluded that no one had succeeded in making his program clearly stronger than what was available nearly two years ago. Now it seems that this statement isn't valid any longer!
On this list the new program Rebel 8.0 Pentium 90 MHz is leading over the second strongest program with as much as 61 points! Since we already have played 568 games, the rating of 2482 will probably not change so much in the future. To raise the playing stength of computer chess so much is a great achievement, and the men to be honoured are the programmer Ed Schröder and Jeroen Noomen, who has made the opening book. Congratulations!
Another new program is Chessmaster 5000 Pentium 90 MHz. The programmer behind CM5000 for Windows 95 is Johan de Koning, who during larger part of 1993 had his program King 2.0 on the first place of SSDFs rating list. After 160 games CM5000 has got a rating of 2396, which is 103 points more than CM4000 got on a 486/50-66 MHz. The larger part of the difference is due to faster hardware, but the program improvement is probably around 30-40 points.
The fact that more and more chess programs are written for Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 is a problem for us in SSDF. With DOS-programs we can play automatically and get more than 500 games in a month, but this isn't possible for Windows-programs. Manual play is very time-consuming, and together with other practical problems this means that we cannot expect to get much more than 200 games for programs like Fritz 4.0 and CM5000. For these programs the margin of error will then be about 50-60 points instead of 25-30 for the DOS-programs.
The best solution would of course be if someone (read Donninger) could make AUTO232 work also with Windows-programs. There has been rumours about this but nothing has been confirmed. Another alternative is that the programmer makes a special DOS-version for SSDF. Richard Lang was kind enough to provide a DOS-version of Genius 4.0, which has enabled us to play more than 700 games on P90. Comparisons between the DOS- and the Windows version showed that the speed difference was less than 5% which could give 3-4 more ratingpoints to the DOS-version. In view of the margin of error mentioned above, we considered this difference to be insignificant.
To test a version which differs slightly from the commercial version is not ideal, but under the present circumstances a practical compromise. We informed our Swedish readers about it in our magazine PLY. After a recent discussion in rgcc we realize that it would have been better to inform our international readers at the same time.
At the moment there is another discussion on Internet concerning SSDF's rating list. Does some opening books give misleadingly high ratings? Should repeat games be disqualified? We are following the discussion with much attention, but need some more time to decide if there is any reason to make changes in our testwork.
