Hi, let me introduce myself!!
Yeah, the picture was taken a few years ago!!!
I am Martha Smithpeters and I have been married for almost 40 years to the same guy. We will have our 40th anniversary on July 7, 2002. Our son Chris and his wife, Kristy have our 9 month old grandson Jacob Colt. Dennis, our youngest son is married to Angie and they have given us our granddaughter, Allison Bonnie, who will be 3 in July.
We have two dogs, JoJo and Bandit, who were found in an orange grove by a CHP. Our retired guard dog, Killer, now lives here after serving many years at our business site. Jim has doves who come and feed almost daily in our yard. I have a very established and content group of spiders living in almost every corner of my house, knowing that they are not likely to be disturbed.
Jim and I met when we were both attending Porterville High School. He was a senior with a ducktail and a 55 Chevy, and I was a lowly sophomore. We were married right after I graduated from High School.
About My Career
We owned Auto Safety Center for 28 years and finally decided we needed a change. So we both went in totally different directions from our "previous life"
Jim started a business called JAS Enterprises and does concrete pumping and custom lumber milling.
I work for a private fire company, North Tree Fire International based in Monterey California. I work in the Incident Management Support division, and I'm on call during the fire season. It is a great job because I never know where I will be going during the season. I was in Montana, Idaho, Utah and California in 2000, and California, Idaho and Nevada in 2001. I keep my tent and sleeping bag in my Jeep and my duffle bag ready to go.
I also substitute teach at Porterville Adult School in the business department and have found that I really enjoy working with adults.
I sold real estate in the 1970's, but soon found that it was not a field that I enjoyed.
About My Community Involvement
I have been involved in numerous service organizations through the years. One of my favorite organizations is the American Cancer Society. I served as the Charter President of the Porterville Unit. I did Breast Self- Examination Training classes, set up the volunteer program for the Road to Recovery project and worked several years as a counselor with the Camp Sunshine Dreams Cancer Camp held each summer at Huntington Lake. I was truly impressed with the attitudes of these kids fighting this great battle at such an early age.
Hobbies
I love to travel the backroads and I love to hike and enjoy the outdoors. The local Sierra Nevadas have great hikes that are so peaceful and beautiful. A favorite of mine is Needles Lookout. A couple of years ago, a friend and I made a Mt Whitney hike. We made it to 12,500 feet before I realized I should have packed oxygen instead of food. That hike is truly a challenge.
