Who was Harpo Marx?

Harpo Marx was born Adolph Marx on November 23, 1888. He grew up in turn-of-the-century New York City with his 4 brothers, who later became known as Groucho, Chico, Gummo, and Zeppo. They toured the vaudeville circuit during the early 1900's in several acts, but finally settled on a comedy act including 4 of the brothers (minus Gummo), known collectively as the Marx Brothers.

In the mid-1920's they hit broadway, starred in 3 plays, and eventually made it to the big screen in 1929. Over the course of their career, they made 13 movies, including "Duck Soup" which is rated #5 on AFI's list of the top 100 comedies of all time.

Harpo Marx's movie character was extremely unique. He usually wore a black hat, tattered raincoat, and carried an old car horn with him all the time, which was his main means of communication. Throughout his career, Harpo never uttered a single word on stage or in front of the camera. Although he could talk in real life, he preferred communicating through pantomime, and let his brothers do the talking.

His was a lovable character who played the harp, picked people's pockets, and innocently chased blondes around, but never caught them. Harpo found ways to be funny without talking. He was like a little boy who never grew up, and wanted to enjoy simple things that made him happy.

In his personal life, Harpo remained a bachelor until age 47 when he married actress Susan Fleming, with whom he adopted and raised 4 children. He died in 1964 on his 28th wedding anniversary, after open-heart surgery.

"Harpo played the right instrument. He was an angel. There was nobody like him, there never will be anybody like him. He was just simply wonderful. He never had a bad word for anybody... not like me. I at least occasionally say something. But Harpo... they don’t make that kind anymore."
