All of the schools in the Columbus
Municipal School District use the Saxon Math Program. I must say
I
think it is wonderful. Listed below are some of the components that
make
this such an outstanding program:
- The skills are repeated
many times throughout the program so that the student can continue to
practice the skill.
- Most of the skills,
especially new concepts, are taught using hands-on activities and
manipulatives.
- Each day a page is done
in class. On the
back (the B side of the paper) is the homework assignment which gives
extra practice on the skills taught in class. This is great
reinforcement and also
helps children who might not have mastered the skill completely in
class.
- If parents help their
children with homework, they will know exactly what is being taught in
math each day.
- After the first 10
lessons, a written and
an individual oral assessment is given to the class. Then a written
assessment is given after every 5 lessons.
- This program teaches
children to show how they figured out the answer, not just how
to get the correct answer. This is what they must be able to do
in the upper grades on performance based
achievement tests. Sale's test scores in math have been some of the
highest in the entire
Columbus Municipal School District. I feel that this is partially true
due
to the use of the Saxon Math Program.
