With our son we always tried to come down to his level of understanding when we wanted to teach him something. The more graphic we could make it link to what we were teaching him the better he understood. Below is a beautiful memory of something we taught him, and some 17 or so years later he still talks about it.

When was about 4 or so years old I wanted to teach him that our Father in heaven always heard his prayers and that nothing could stop them from getting to Him.

I took one of my stick incense and lit it. When the smoke was going up so nice and straight we played with a hand movement. He saw how the air current could cause it to change directions. Then I put my hand over where the smoke was rising. As it went around my hand then up I told him that is what happens to our prayers. It would always get to our Father. He was very impressed by that.

He was delighted with the experiment. A simple thing that a child could understand yet it was very effective.
