"He became beyond all his forebears the most famous and powerf ul." In 1322 he was knighted and accompanied the king on an expe dition to the walls of Edinburgh. Against Edward II favorites, H ugh le Despenser, Sr. and Jr., Percy made a firm stand, and he w as of the party of Queen Isabel until after the murder of the Ki ng (Edward II), her behavior and that of Roger Mortimer set al l that was honest in England against them. It was then that th e Lord of Alnwick drew his sword for the young King, Edward III , and his name was in the list of Peers who passed sentence upo n Mortimer. He was made Governor of the Castles of Pickering an d Scarborough, Guardian of Portre Castle in Northumberland 1326 , Warden of Skipton Castle and of the Scotch Marches 1327. Summo ned to Parliament 1322-1351. He died suddenly at Alnwick Feb. 17 , 1352.

General Notes: Thomas was one of the Original Knights of the Garter. When fou r years old the king, Edward II, soliciting a dispensation fro m the Pope to enable him to marry his cousin Catherine, daughte r of Roger Mortimer of Wigmore, under whose guardianship the you ng Earl had been placed. An alliance eventually formed when hi s lordship had completed his 15th year. In two years afterward s the Earl, by special license from the Crown, was allowed to d o homage and to assume his hereditary office of Sheriff of Worce stershire and Chamberlain of the Exchequer. This nobleman sustai ned in the brilliant reign of Edward III the high military renow n of his illustrious progenitor, and became distinguished in arm s almost from boyhood. He was at Cressy in France, with Edward , the Black Prince, and after their heroic achievements in Franc e he arrayed himself under the banner of the cross and reaped fr esh laurels on the fields of Palestine.
This nobleman almost rebuilt Warwick Castle, which had been demo lished in the time of the de Maudits, adding strong gateways wit h fortified gates and embattled towers, and rebuilt the walls. H e likewise founded the choir of the collegiate church of St. Mar y, built a booth hall market place and made the Town of Warwic k toll free. His lordship had 7 sons and 9 daughters. He died No vember 13, 1369, of the plague at Calais, where he was employe d in a military capacity, and had just achieved a victory over t he French.

In 1332 he enfeoffed the Abbot and Co nvent of Whatley, in the barony of Whalton, with remainder to hi mself. The barony of Whalton consists of four townships, viz., W halton, Ogle, Riplington and Newham. He had a grant for free war ren in Whalton 11th of Edward II, 1317, and in the same year the re was a grant to Geoffrey le Scrope and Ivetta, his wife. He wa s knighted at Northampton and made a banneret, 14th of Edward II I, 1340, and purchased the manor of Masham, County York, and fou nded the family of Scrope, of Masham. He was Serjeant-at-Law, 13 15; Justice of the Common Pleas, 1323; Chief Justice of the King 's Bench, 1323, 1326, and reinstated 1328. He was frequently emp loyed in diplomatic engagements, which obliged him for a time t o resign his place in the court, and served in the wars in Scotl and and France. He died seized of Whalton, Newham, and a moiet y of Hallywell, 14th of Edward III, 1340, and was buried in th e church of Coberham Abbey, County York. He also owned in the co nfines of the parish of Great Harksley, the great manor of Neyla nd. It was granted in 1256 in fee to John de Burgh, and next occ urs in the noble family of Scrope of Masham, for Geoffrey le Scr ope, who died 1340, held the manor of Neyland, which was in th e confines of Essex and Suffolk, of the Lady of Clavering. He ma rried Ivetta, daughter of Sir William Ross, of Ingmanthorpe, Cou nty York, before 1315. They had Thomas, John, William, Stephen , Geoffrey, Henry, Beatrice, Constance and Ivetta.

was the brother of our ancestress JOAN AUDLEY (RIN 690), to whom he
was found one of his next heirs. He was in the Welsh wars against
Glendower, and was sum. to Parl. as a Baron [LORD AUDLEY] 21 Dec 1405
to 26 Aug 1408. (Tuchet, pp. 60-61), adds that he was Keeper of
Llandovery Castle 1403, Keeper of Brecknock Castle 1404.
