It is incontrovertibly clear from Domesday Book t hat the Saxon lords of High Legh were ejected at the Conquest, a nd that a new lord was then introduced, Gilbert Venables, Lord o f Kinderton, from whose grants, or from those of his descendants , all subsequent proprietors must have derived their possession . In or about the time of Henry II (1154-1189) the Manor of Hig h Legh had been granted out in moieties to two families, who ass umed the local name, the earliest known ancestor of which are Ha mon de Legh, Progenitor of the West-Hall family, and Edward de L egh, progenitor of the East-Hall family. Both of these were as n early contemporaries as possible, as can be gathered by marriage s and dates of their immediate descendants, and both were most p robably original grantees from the Venables family. There is not , however, anything which can induce a belief in Hamon and Efwar d being common stock. The origin of Hamon de Legh is referred t o the Venables family by strong probabilities. Dr. Williamson, h istorian, who quotes a deed in his possession, for Hamon being o riginal grantee, expressly states him to be descended from Gilbe rt Venables. Of the Moiety of West-Hall, later one moiety was gi ven by Thomas Legh to his half brother, Ralph Hawarden.

General Notes: Robert became prominent because he acquired immense wealth by hi s marriage. He took to wife Sibilla, daughter and heiress of Rob ert de Ewyas, Lord Ewyas of Harold Ewyas in Hertfordshire, and i n 9th of Richard I, had a suit with Herminus de Braton for the a dvowson of Braton church in Norfolk, part of her vast inheritanc e. But it appears, though duly married, a strange contest aros e in the 11th of King John regarding her; when William de Newmar ket was summoned to show by what right he claimed to wife her wh o was Robert Tregoze's wife; for it appears that Richard I had g iven her to Tregoze in marriage. Whereupon Newmarket came and sa id that he had married her in the time of Richard I by gift of R obert de Ewyas, her father. It is very certain, however, that Tr egoze had sufficient power to retain the heiress, for in 14 of K ing John they recovered lands in Somerset, in the right of Sibel la. Meanwhile Sir Robert de Tregoze was High Sheriff of Wiltshir e, 3rd of Richard I, and in three years afterwards was engaged i n the expedition made into Normady. In first of John 1200 he gav e the King 200 marks in silver to have granted to him the wardsh ip of the heir and lands of Geoffrey Hose, and in the 7th of Joh n, 1206, on collecting scutage of that King's reign, answered 3 8 marks for 19 knight's fees, belonging to the honour of Rober t de Ewyas, his father-in-law. He died about 1212. Sibilla, hi s wife, survived him and married 2nd Roger de Clifford and die d 1236. They had two sons, daughter.

General Notes: Walter de Lacie, elder son, paid in the 10th of Richard I, 1199 , 2000 marks for the king's favour and to have livery of his lan ds, but this being the last year of that monarch's reign, his br other and successor, King John, exacted no less than 1000 pound s for similar favour of livery. In the 9th of the latter king' s reign, Walter de Lacie obtained a confirmation of his lands an d dominion of Meath in Ireland, to be held by him and his heir s for the service of 50 knights' fees; as also his fees in Finga ll, in the valley of Dublin, to be held by the service of seve n knights' fees. But in three years afterwards, King John passin g into Ireland with his army, Lacie was forced to deliver himsel f up and all his possessions on that kingdom, and to abjure th e realm. He was subsequently banished from England, but in the 1 6th of the same reign, he seems to have made his peace, for he w as allowed to repossess his Castle of Ludlow; and the next yea r he recovered all of his lands, except the castle and lands o f Drogheda, by paying a fine of 4000 marks to the crown. After t his we find him Sheriff of Herefordshire, in the 18th of King Jo hn, and 2nd of Henry III, and in the 14th of the latter king, jo ined with Geoffrey de Marisco, then Justice of Ireland, and Rich ard de Burgh, in subduing the King of Connaught, who had taken u p arms to expel the English from his territories. So much for th e secular acts of this baron. Of his works of Piety, it is recor ded that he confirmed to the canons of Lathony all those lands a nd churches in Ireland, granted to them by his father, Hugh de L acie; and of his own bounty, gave them the church of Our Lady o f Drogheda, with other valuable gifts. Likewise the tithe of all th e hides of those cattle which were yearly sold at the larder o f his Castle at Ewyas.
