title: MASA newsletter
(101%-1%) of this
newsletter will cover the issue of SEA arrangements.
1. SEA Nite
- We have gotten the permit to
sell tickets for the SEA Nite event.
adults including faculties $7
students with student IDs $5
kids $3
- Mas and Fizah are assigned
to contact the Thai Students Association to dicuss the issues of caterers
for the event. The suggested choice of refreshments for the event is Thai
refreshments. (food will be free of charge during the event)
- The event will start at 5pm
and end at 7pm on April 1st, 2007. Guests with tickets can start coming in
at 4.30pm.
- A description of the SEA
Nite event will be posted on the Freeborn Hall website (this has already
been taken care of by Kumitaa)
- Other forms of publicity
include flyers created on www.facebook.com, advertisements at the
International House and the SiSS.
- Tentative
floorplan includes: a stage, a raised platform (for the fashion show),
seats, food and refreshments table, booths, and slideshows.
- Booths will hold minor
activities like for taking pictures with MASA members in costumes.
- Farah is in charge of
decoration.
- We should try to finish
everything by this week because the meeting this Saturday will be our last
meeting this quarter (the Saturday after that will be in finals week so
there will not be a meeting)
- Once all the planning and
confirmations and ideas are decided upon, Jeny will email the other SEA
clubs again.
- A suggestion has been made
to either increase the number of booths or the number of performances at
the event.
The new
performances decided upon is a solo Syair performance by
Fizah and a pentomime of the Malay folk tale "Bawang Putih
Bawang Merah"
The members
involved in the pentomime performance are:
Yao Hua, Mas,
YoongWearn, Izah, Adilla, FeiYian, MunHua
That's all for now. There will
be a meeting this Saturday. Details are in another email. Tell me if you
didn't get the 'other' email and I'll send you an'other' email.
Cheers
Mun Hua

2007
Hey all,
Hope everyone's still sane
enough to be reading this since it's midterms week and all. I'll keep this
short (really) this time. Topics of discussion according to importance:
1. SEA Nite
For those who still don't
know, SEA Nite will be held on April 1st 2007. Members have agreed to not
sell food in the event. Instead, we will be selling tickets at prices of $7
for adults, $5 for students, $3 for kids. Admission for babies are free of
charge. The reason this decision is reached is because for the event, we
can only get food from registered food caterers and the process itself is
quite complicated. Also, we will try to get sponsorships from food caterers
so that we can serve some snacks to the guests throughout the event.
As for the activities/programs
during the event, a few suggestions were made in the meeting. These include
a 'teh tarik' competition, games, souvenir pins with brochures (Mas and
Fizah volunteered for this task *claps whistles etc*), and also a
photo-taking booth so that people can take pictures with malaysians in
their traditional costumes.
2. Picnic Day
Final votes have been cast
during the meeting itself and a decision has been made to perform in the
Davis Dance Revolution event instead of the Picnic Day Parade.
3. Spring Break plans: for
those who are planning to travel out of the States this Spring break,
please remember to have your I-20 form signed by SISS so that you won't be
denied entry back into the States (or to avoid complications during your
trip)
4. UCD Lobby Corps: they will
be having a meeting every Wednesday 7pm at Moss Room (MU).
That's all for this time. I'm
pretty tired and I'm sure you are too : ) Take good care of yourselves
everyone and I'll see you guys Saturday. I will send out another meeting
before Saturday to remind you all about the meeting this Saturday (that is,
if I remember). : )
Cheers,
Mun Hua

*Fact of the week:
"Our ancestors believed
that old proverb "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," but they
didn't understand the 'Why' of it. Nutritional scientists research for
evidences that verify how apples are good for our health. Apples are rich
in pectin, a soluble fiber (fibre), which is effective in lowering
cholesterol levels. Apples work in any form, from raw to juice, to maintain
good cardiovascular health. Researchers at the University of California,
Davis, found that apples act as antioxidants against the damaging portion
of cholesterol in the blood stream."

February 10th,
2007
Hi again everyone!
For those who missed last Saturday's
meeting, here's a brief recap of the meeting...sponsored by xxx, inc.
Remember to read the entire email because recaps are not arranged based on
importance. It so happens to be arranged based on unimportance (well
that's what I think, not on purpose though)
1. Israel and Palestine: Roots
of Conflict, Prospects for Peace
The Muslim Students
Association at UC Davis will be hosting a talk given by Norman G.
Finkelstein on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict covering the historical
analysis of the roots of the present-day situation, etc. The talk will be
held on March 1st, 2007 at 7.30pm in 1100 Social Sciences. The following
link will bring you on an amazing journey, in which you will be greeted by
talking animals, magicians, witches, dwarfs and human-eating beasts, and in
the end, you will be faced with the one thing that you crave for
the most; the flier for the event. http://aycu34.webshots.com/image/11273/2003619668170777630_rs.jpg. ((exaggerated
exaggeration))
2. MASA on Students Affairs
Website
A representative from the
Students Affairs Website has emailed Jeny showing their interest in
featuring MASA on their website under the Student Life category. A
member/representative from the association is required to write a brief
descriptive paragraph about the club with these guidelines as reference:
- Do you hold regularly
scheduled meetings throughout the year?
- May students join at any
time during the year?
- What special events or activities do you have planned?
- How has the club benefited you or what have you enjoyed about being a
member?
- If a student was considering joining, what would you tell him or her
about the club?
All members are welcome
to send me or jeny an email answering some of these questions and we'll
make a compilation out of YOUR ideas....that's right...your ideas! let your
voices be heard!
3. Job Search Strategies
for Biotech
For those who are new to the club,
most of the members of MASA major in biotech, hence the obvious emphasis on
biotech news and announcements. This workshop will be held on Feb 12, at
12.10pm in 229 South Hall. After studying here for almost three years I've
finally found out where South Hall actually is! So ask me if you don't
know. You can also ask me if you already know where it is. :D
4.
Winter 2007 Internship and Career Fair
The Internship and Career Fair
will be held on Thursday Feb 22nd, from 10am to 2pm at the ARC pavillion (especially
for Life Science majors...and those who are interested in
getting freebies, I think)
5. Kak Mit's response to SEA
Nite and the Seniors Graduation ceremony
Kak Mit states that she will
try to make it to the events if sent an invitation and also if she is able
to schedule-wise.
6. Merdeka 2007
Malaysia will be celebrating
it's 50th anniversary as a free country (Merdeka!! x3). Kak Mit would like
us to do something in conjunction with the event (video, etc). Most members
of the club won't be here on Aug 31st itself and so we can always do the
'something' earlier when everyone is still around and not enjoying nasi
lemak or fried kuey teow in Malaysia (dang it). Suggestions are welcome : )
7. Picnic Day
On picnic day itself, members
have agreed to take the third option (refer to email with subject
line 'masa newsletter 02032007' for more details) which is
to compete at the Annual Davis Dance Revolution event. Prize
money, if won, will go to the club *smiles big teeth-showing smile*
8. Encik Wan
En. Wan will be visiting Davis
on Feb 17th and will be staying until Feb 19th. During that time he will
tag along with a few Malaysians to see where we buy our groceries, where we
eat, what we eat, etc and will determine how much we spend/need per month/quarter.
9. Seniors Graduation Event
We, the Juniors and
Sophomores, have discussed and deliberated on the hows, whys, whens and
whats of the event and on Saturday, and an announcement has been made
regarding certain aspects of the event. Everyone must come to the event
clad in pastel colored semi-formal outfits. Also, we are expecting an
average of about 3 guests per senior. So, for those who are planning to
bring along more of their cronies and what-nots, please try to
persuade/bribe the other seniors into bringing along less cronies of
their own (just kidding). :D
I will send out a separate
email announcing the date, time and place of the CNY reunion dinner this
Friday so that those who do not read the newsletters will still get the
info about the dinner...hopefully.
So that's it. There will NOT
be a meeting this Saturday (CNY Saturday) simply because it's CNY : ) It's
like school public holiday wahahaha.
the one and only,
mh
Oh, and Happy Valentines Day!
<3

Interesting fact of the week
(cny special edition)
With Chinese New Year just
around the corner indicating a whole new year (chinese time :D) here's
something to have fun with:
"Chinese New Year in 2007 is the Year
of the Red Fire Pig. The year of the pig ends the 12 year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Like the
houses of the zodiac, the animals of Chinese astrology are said to
influence your luck during the year. Your horoscopes for 2007, the year of
the pig, depends on which animal signifies the year you were born."
To see what
your luck's gonna be like, or what you should do or should not do (don't
take them too seriously though :D), visit http://www.chiff.com/a/chinese-horoscopes.htm
February 3rd,
2007
Yo,
Feb 3rd,
2007: mh resumes her quest to set the record in the guiness
book of world records for the shortest MASA newsletter ever.
1. Picnic Day
Unfortunately, MASA was
unable to secure a food booth for the picnic day event. Hence, MASA is
left with three options:
a. to parrticipate in the Picnic Day parade usually
held on Picnic Day itself (application dateline Feb 28th)
b. to perform special events
= non-profiting events like dancing, singing, etc (application dateline
Feb 28th)
c. to compete in the 3rd
Annual Davis Dance Revolution for the chance to win some money for the
club! ($_$) (application dateline Mar 8th)
So I need you guys to let me
know what you would like to do by our next meeting. You can email me
if you're too shy to speak out in the meeting, or tell me in class if you
happen to see me there, or send me a text message (not preferable because
mh doesn't like high phone bills), or just say it out in the next meeting
(which I think is the most popular option since nobody reads my emails
right righttt and prolly no one's reading this sentence anyways eh) :P
2. Email from the
Muslim Students Assocation (MSA)
Our president, Jeny,
received an email from MSA. They claimed that a lot of Muslims were
picked on and invited MASA members to join in their efforts to fight
against the situation. MASA has decided that it's best to not
get involved.
mh: sounds so dangerous...
:( everyone remember to be careful and cautious at all times...go
everywhere in groups of two or more...hold hands when crossing the
road...look left and right and left again...(everyone kicks mh)
3. "Have a
Heart, Lend a Hand"
Those who are interested in
doing some good to the community/society are urged to sign up to
participlate in the annual Week of Service starting Feb 9th till Feb
16th 2007. visit the website at http://humancorps.ucdavis.edu/stu.htm for
more information!!
4. Pink Day
Pink is the color of the
season! (no, that was last season) Anyways, Feb 8th is Pink Day in honor
of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Support the fight against cancer by
hearing a breast cancer survivor's story and learn important breast
cancer information from the Cowell Student Health Center on Thursday (Feb
8th) 6-8pm at the Griffin Lounge (1st floor MU)!
5. The Female Orgasm
The female orgasm
talk/discussion will be held at the 194 Chemistry Building from 7pm to
8.30 pm on Feb 8th (Thursday). The discussion/talk will be led by sex
educators Marshall Miller and Dorian Solot and it's open
to everyone (single or partnered, and to all genders) This
event is highly recommended by some MASA members! :D let's go! wahahaha.

6. API event
Linda Chen from the Cross
Cultural Center (CCC) would like to know if we are interested in
participating in the Asian American & Pacific Islander event.
Suggestions which came up during the meeting were fashion shows,
food-selling, dancing (performance), and the traditional wedding
ceremonies in Malaysia. Email me by the next meeting (Saturday) to let me
know what the majority prefers!!
7. Chinese New Year
Dinner
The Chinese New Year
dinner/get-together-just-because-MASA-is-funding-at-least-half-of-it-i'm-just-kidding
is going to be held at the House of Chang on Feb 16th (Friday Night). I
need to know how many people will be showing up. Kindly reply my email
asap so that we can start making reservations and stuff because we're a
big (and loud) group. It'd be great if every apartment unit (if you're
living together, that is) can select a representative to email me about
who's showing up and who's not. Those who are not living in an apartment
unit with another Malaysian, be independent and email me yourself la.
It's not that time-consuming plus, you get to slimmer fingers by the end
of all that typing :)
That's it for now. If you've
made it till this part of the email, good for you! I barely made it here
myself.
Remember to email me ya!!
Next meeting will be on Saturday, 10am-1pm. I'll see everyone on
Saturday!!

Egghead news of the week:
"Bob Arneson believed that art should
interact with everyday life. He wanted art that regular people would
understand and enjoy. Maybe that's why the Eggheads are the most
photographed objects on campus." — Nelson Art Gallery Director
Renny Pritikin

sculptures around uc davis and more importantly, on the artist himself,
