2001 NJCL CONVENTION @ TULANE UNIVERSITY, LOUISIANA

In the Summer of 2001, the National JCL Convention was held at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana during the week of July 17-22. Like several other states, Massachusetts delegates arrived at the Convention a day early. This extra day gave delegates a chance to adapt to the new environment. Some of us explored the campus, while others remained in their rooms to unpack or to retreat from the heat. Although Massachusetts delegates did not reside on the Tulane campus, no complaints of walking to Tulane were heard because the distance was extremely short. Every place, where the activities were held, was in the same vicinity. We couldn't wait for the convention to officially begin.

During the week, the delegates competed in graphic, creative, athletic, and academic contests. We dressed according to each day's spirit themes, attended the general assemblies, and cheered for Massachusetts. During the day, some of our delegates occupied their time by attending seminars and workshops, while others tried to squeeze in as much time as possible to study certamen. After all the stress of the day, the MJCL delegates always have energy to attend the nightly dances. Every night after the dances, all the delegates attended state fellowship, at which they recapped what they did that day and discussed what would happen the next.

Our delegates really enjoyed the week. They got the chance to meet delegates from other states or to become more acquainted with delegates from their own. Others were also given the opportunity to meet their JCL pen pals in person. At this Convention, Massachusetts did exceptionally well. We not only had delegates who each captured first place in three of the four contest areas, but also one received a trophy for overall sweepstake points and another received a plaque for the Lillie B. Hamilton award. Yiting Jin of Boston Latin School was awarded a medal for placing first overall in the Creative Arts and she also received third place in the Lillie B. Hamilton, which is awarded to delegates who placed in three of the four contest areas. Donald Kimball of Boston Latin Academy swam his hardest and was awarded a medal for winning first in Olympika. Amanda Luong also of Boston Latin Academy won first in Graphic Arts and was also awarded a medal for her accomplishments. Amanda also received a trophy for placing sixth overall in the whole convention.

This is truly a convention to remember. Everything at the convention was satisfactory; the food was number 1, the dormitories were adequate, and the campus was loved by all. Although during this convention Massachusetts was not able to win the Spirit Contest, many thanks must be given to our 2nd VP Kimberly for working so hard and always lugging around the spirit day props. Massachusetts loves Lousiana and can't wait for Kentucky.
