solar electric panels
1/14/06: PV panels for batteryless net-metered electric generation
6 150watt Solec panels with Siemens polycrystalline cells, good for low light such as cloudy days.
More info.

They are mounted in racks made from recycled bed frames which are a good source of high carbon, high strength steel. They are mounted on the north side of the roof at about a 12deg pitch so as to not be visible from the street. Experience from my previous installation showed it was better to optimize summer production anyway since they will often be covered in snow for a day or so after each storm. The picture was taken from the lift used to put the panels on the roof on an unusually warm, 50degF, rainy January day. Thanks Paul for the lift!

Power is fed into the utility lines by an inverter located in the garage. Many states in the country allow this. See: listing. If more is generated in a month than used the surplus shows as a kilowatthour credit on the bill. The spring thru early fall credits are then used up in the winter. Its nice to see the meter running backwards whenever generation exceeds consumption!
