PlankingDecember 2000 The planking is made of spruce from northern Sweden and is 1 1/16 inch, 27 mm, thick. Edge glued with West epoxy and edge nailed. The stem: The bulkhead behind the stem is permanent. We fair the stem as we go up with the planking. The planks are about 30 percent higher then they are thick. This is because we first were planning to make them hollow/round but found it easy to plank this way. We might plane them down to the right height when we get to the turn of the bilge if we need to. Here you can get a picture of the whole boat. Click here to turn the boat upside down and get a better picture of what the boat will look like. As we didn’t start with the sheer, the eye can be fooled as the planks follow a line where it will be most horizontal when we reach the keel. Later, the clamp at the sheer is finished and good to walk on when planking higher up. We missed the upper rounding of the transom as this follows the deck rounding. It should actually extend further up. We will add it before glassing. The jig for cutting scarves seven times as long as the with of the plank. We could cut six strips at a time. |
