The syntetic resin: BAKELITE  was discovered by LEO BAEKELAND in 1907, USA(click here for more on Leo Baekeland - TIME100)
The bakelite process allowed to design cameras as wish: the classic-look or in a completely new designs.  examples:
1. Folding - like the Soho cameras.
2. Strut/vest - the Hawkette#2 (Kodak) or Soho-B.
3. TLR -like the Lubitel 2 camera
OR original free design like the Univex-A, Purma, Mako  Shark and others.
Colors: either the 'traditional' black or the more colorful red-maroon 'family of colors' or marbeled.
The chemical-formal name of Bakelite is:   polyoxybenzylmethlenglycolanhybride   ;)
