The W108/W109 Technical Corner

Common W108/W109 body variations
I took the liberty to use pictures here of privatly owned cars that I have found on the web, and I hope you forgive me if one of the pictures is of your car.

The bumpers

The difference the is mainly the number-plate light. On the Europian models the light is attached to the bumper itself, but on the US models there are two lights on the rear section on each side of the number-plate.

This is the Europian style bumper.

This is the most common US bumper.

This is another variation of the US bumper (the front bumper has also these two extra vertical bumper parts).

The Headlights

There was some difference between the front light units of the Europian and US models. The Europian front light unit was the original design, but because of some regulation the US import had to be equiped with the double round headlight unit. Later the more expencive models like the 300SEL 6.3 and the 4.5 models where all equiped with the US hedlight unit by standard.

This is the early Europian headlight unit (curve face glass).

Late Europian headlight unit (flat face glass).

The Steering wheels

Two types of steering wheels where used in the W108's & W109's. It was the early type with a crome edged centre, and the late type used after the introduction of the New Generation /8 model-line in 1967. Both types where offered in black (standard) and ivory.

The early type steering wheel used in all the 250S/SE models and the 300SE/SEL models from 1965 to 1967.

This is the New Generation, /8, steeringwheel introduced in 1967 and used in all the models, except the 250's.

The Dashboards

The 250S/SE dashboard (small air vents and a crome stripe).

The standard 280S/SE/SEL dashbard (most common).
