EDNA MCKEE:SERVING THE LORD BY
HELPING THOSE IN NEED
by David Morgan
Edna McKee of Greenwood considers
herself a servant of the Lord and one way to serve the Lord is to serve others,
which she does exceptionally well.
She is a lifelong resident of
Greenwood and a lifelong member of Matthews United Methodist Church in South
Greenwood. Her parents, James Douglas McKee and Ruby Elma McKee first took her
to church as an infant when it was originally located in what is now the
Matthews Community Center on Kirksey Drive.
Ms. McKee was raised in a
closeknit, Christian family who had daily devotionals. She was one of eight
children and has two brothers and one sister still living. One of her brothers
is Bruce McKee of Coronaca. he is a former Ninety Six postmaster.
Her father ran a grocery store in
Ninety Six and later in Greenwood. At the time of his death, James McKee was
working for Curtis Miller.
Retired since 1979, Edna McKee
has worked at several jobs, including the Greenwood Methodist Home and 25 years
at the Matthew Plant of Greenwood Mills. Before retiring, she worked with the
eight year old class and the MYF at her church. Now she teaches the two and
three year olds at Matthews United Methodist. She has also been a member of the
United Methodist Women since the 1960s.
She is a member of the church
committee which is in charge of visitation to members who are either sick or
home bound. Ms. McKee helps look after these people and tend to their needs. She
will sit with them if they are sick at home or in the hospital. She will buy
groceries and other items for them. If there is a death in the home of a church
member, Edna McKee is there to help out while funeral preparations are being
made. She does this not only for her fellow church members, but also for
friends, relatives and neighbors.
Edna McKee mails church bulletins
at her own expense to members who live out of town. One fact she is especially
proud of is that since her retirement in July of 1979 she has not missed a
single church service.
In 1955, Edna McKee was in an
automobile accident. She was in a car with five other passengers. The car was
not involved with any other vehicle, but flipped three times. Ms. McKee was the
only one injured in the wreck. While recuperating in the hospital, she knew that
God had put her on earth for a purpose and has been doing her best to serve Him.
Her explanation for helping
others is a simple one: "I do it because I love the Lord and I love
people."
