3rd Quarter Project:

Famous Romans from the Republic (509-27 B.C.):
1. Appius Claudius- Influential senator and builder
2. Cato the Elder- Influential old school senator
3. Hannibal- Famous general and enemy of the Romans
4. Scipio Africanus- Famous Roman general who defeated Hannibal
5. Jugurtha- North African king and enemy of the Romans
6. Terence (along with Plautus)- Famous Roman comedy writer
7. Tiberius Gracchus- Famous reformer and leader for the lower classes
8. Gaius Gracchus- Influential reformer and leader for the lower classes
9. Marius- Famous Roman general who dominated Roman politics for a time
10. Sulla- Famous Roman general who dominated Roman politics for a time
11. Cinna- Famous Roman general and politician at same time of Marius and Sulla
12. Spartacus- Famous gladiator who lead a slave revolt
13. Crassus- Rich and famous general and politician
14. Pompey the Great- Powerful and famous Roman general and politician
15. Cicero- Powerful and persuasive Roman politician and speaker
16. Cataline- Roman senator famous for a plot to take over Rome
17. Cato the Younger- Serious and old school senator
18. Catullus- Famous poet and son of a wealthy Roman family
19. Clodia/Lesbia- Powerful woman with interesting relationships and enemies
20. Julius Caesar- Famous Roman general who dominated Roman politics
21. (Marcus Junius) Brutus- Senator noted for his role in the assassination of J. Caesar
22. Octavian- Adopted son of J. Caesar, Roman general, senator, and “leading citizen”
23. Marc Antony- Powerful Roman general and politician who struggled with Octavian
24. Cleopatra- Queen of Egypt and influential among Roman politicians/generals
25. Lepidus- Roman general who shared great power with Octavian and M. Antony

--Each student will research one of these famous Romans and create a Power Point presentation of at least 9 slides including a title slide and bibliography slide.
The other slides will cover facts that must include the famous person’s:
1. Early Life and Family
2. Allies and Enemies
3. Outline of Career / adult life
4. Details of Accomplishments (2 slides)
5. Death
6. Why this person is worth studying in the 21st Century A.D.

--Each student must have 3 bibliographical sources, at least one of which must be a printed source (book/encyclopedia).
--Each project must include 5 images (portraits, maps, places, timelines, symbols etc.)
--Each student must hand in written notes and any printouts of information that he or she collected for the project.
--The presentations will be given in class and must be over 4 min. to receive full credit.
--As a class, we will spend 1 day in the Library and 3 days in the Computer Lab to help students prepare their presentations- USE YOUR TIME WISELY!
