Relief Trip to Honduras
About Us |
We
are a group of first year medical students at VCU School of Medicine. Dr.
Thomas Kerkering, an infectious disease specialist with extensive experience
in international health initiatives, is leading our trip. In addition,
various physicians from across the nation will be meeting us at Little
Brothers Little Sisters Orphanage to complete this mission.
Michael A. Crouch, MD, MSPH ~ Dr. Crouch's hometown is Pocahontas, Arkansas. He was an undergrad at University of Mississippi and went to medical school at Stanford University. Dr. Crouch is going to Honduras, "to help the underserved people there and directly help third world people instead of just donating money. His hobbies are, soccer and the blues guitar. Some of Dr. Crouch's medical interests are heart disease prevention, obesity, depression, and anxiety. Bernadette Page, MD ~ Dr. Page's hometown is Durham, NC. Her speciality is Emergency Medicine. Dr. Page bosts that she has the world's cutest grandson (7 months old) and makes great pineapple upside down cake. She and her husband worked in Zimbabwe for four months as medical students in the late 60s. They are interested in returning to a developing country to work for a few years when their youngest child (18) graduates from college. Dr. Page and her husband are particularly drawn to the Hispanic community which has blossomed in Durham over the last five years. Byron Mainor, MD ~ Dr. Mainor was an undergrad at Wofford College and graduated medical school from the College of Georgia. His specialty is Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Mainor's hobbies are golf, scuba diving, flying, and working out. Dr. Mainor is going to Honduras to help the children of the Honduras who are much less fortunate than we are. Dmitry (Dima) Gorelik ~ Dima graduated from the University of Virginia and is now a first-year medical student at MCV. His hometown is Minsk, Belarus and in 1990 it became Baltimore, MD. Dima is going to Honduras because he is interested in learning about heatlh care delivery in different cultures. Dima would like to get more clinical experience while helping people who have limited access to healthcare. His hobbies are soccer, tennis, running, cooking, hiking, camping, dancing Salsa, learning, traveling, chess, bioethics, etc. Dima's medical interests are infectious diseases, tropical medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, bioethics, and genetics. In two years Dima is going to fly on an F16 as part of Air Force training. Katie Donohue ~ Katie is a first year medical student at MCV. She was an undergrad at William and Mary and graduated in 1998 with a degree in history. After graduation, Katie worked as a journalist in Washington DC. Originally from Reston, Virginia, she also spent four months backpacking through South America before beginning classes last Fall. An interest in a career in international medicine, and in particular, the health needs of Latin Americans, first drew Katie to the Honduras mission. Jennifer Baird ~ Jennifer graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia and is now a first-year student at MCV. Her hometown is Houston, TX. Jennifer is going to Honduras because she loves to experience other cultures. She is also looking forward to working with the kids in the orphanage, and sees this as a great chance to use/improve her Spanish. Jennifer is excited about helping others while gaining clinical experience. She also hopes to see some of the beauty of Honduras wilderness. Just a few of Jennifer's many hobbies are hiking, white water rafting, canoeing, skydiving, writing, photography, surfing, making a fool out of myself at Karoake bars, improvisational comedy, caving, learning... Jennifer's medical interests are family practice, surgery, outdoor medicine, international medicine, infectious disease, sports medicine, and any area where she can get to know the people and "get my hands dirty." Deborah Koehn ~ Deborah graduated from the University of Virginia in 1994 as an Anthropology Major with a focus in medical anthropology. She has a long-lived and strong commitment to community service. She started a volunteer program as an undergraduate called Alternative Spring Break. Each year she coordinated groups of 10 students to go to a dozen different communities nationally and internationally to volunteer. She hopes to learn more about the impact of poverty and limited resources on health and to broaden her cross-cultural perspectives. In the end, she hopes that the trip to Honduras will enable her to become a physician who is more aware of the social issues that impact our patients' health. Katie Shew ~ Katie graduated from NC Wake Forest Universityand is now a first year medical student at MCV. Katie is going to Honduras because she wants to challenge herself and experience a different culture. She also wants to share her talents and knowledge with others, and learn about clinical medicine and infectious disease. Katie's hobbies include all sports, camping and hiking, traveling and, cooking. Katie's medical interests are very diverse and include oncology and hematology, allergy, and geriatrics. She is also interested in doing research. Some of Katie's favorite foods are chicken marsala, oysters, and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Cindy Hsu ~ Cindy graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University and is now a first-year medical student at MCV. She is interested in going to Honduras to learn more about medicine, experience a different culture, and expand her horizon. Cindy loves to travel. Her medical interest is Primary Care, specializing in pediatrics. Ashley Jones ~ Ashley graduated from Princeton University. Her hometown is Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. Ashley is going to Honduras because she is interested in international medicine and wants to experince a health care system different from the United States'. She believes that learning about patients with different cultural backgorunds and their attitudes toward medicine will give her valuable insight and better prepare her as a doctor administering care to patients with diverse backgrounds. Ashley's hobbies are running, waterskiing, politics, tennis, yoga, and photography. Ashely's medical interests are pediatrics, obstetrics, and oncology. Stephen Abbott ~ Stephen graduated from Williams College and is now a first year student at MCV. His hometown is Reston, VA. Stephen's medical interests are pediatrics, infectious disease, and immunology. He is going to Honduras because working at the orphanage in Latin America is exciting and challenging. He looks forward to learning more about Honduras, the children, and medical care in a developing country. Stephen would also like to improve his medical Spanish. He lived in Costa Rica for two years, and speak fairly fluent converstional Spanish, but is not yet comfortable with speaking in Spanish about medical terminology. Stephen's hobbies are cooking, gardening, and playing with his dog. Hey Chong ~ Hey graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999 and is now an M.D./Ph.D student at MCV. She is interested in a career involving research and clinical medicine. Hey is going on this trip for numerous reasons, some of which are medical experience and spiritual reasons. Her hobbies include cooking and eating all kinds of good food. She is also a great dancer. |
