2002 NJCL Convention
2002 State Convention
2001 State Convention

  • 2002 NJCL Convention
  • The 49th National Junior Classical League Convention will be held in Lexington, Kentucky at the University of Kentucky. The convention dates are July 30 - August 4, 2002. Spirit and dance themes as well as creative interpretations have been announced. For more information visit the NJCL Convention website. Characters for the costume contest will be:

    Boys - Laocoon
    Girls - Penelope
    Couples - Baucis and Philemon

Laocoon was the Trojan priest of Vergil's Aeneid who said the famous line "I fear all Greeks, even those bearing gifts." He was subsequently silenced by a seamonster, and the Trojans brought the horse into the city without any qualms. Penelope was the wife of Odysseus, who, courted by many suitors, delayed choosing a new husband by weaving. She promised that when she finished the cloth, she would choose a husband, but nightly undid her stitches. Baucis and Philemon welcomed two strangers into their home. Luckily, the two strangers were really disguised gods who granted them a wish: to die at exactly the same time so they wouldn't have to see the other suffer.

If you are interested in attending the convention, talk to your Latin teacher. You can also e-mail our MDJCL advisor, Ms. Huhn, at mhuhn@teacher.com for more information. As we begin to formulate our final plans for the event, more information will be posted.

  • 2002 State Convention
  • The annual MDJCL State Convention will once again be held at Notre Dame College in Baltimore on Saturday, April 20, 2002. Many thanks to Sister Therese for securing us the time. We are in the process of planning the event right now. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know at HopperQ@yahoo.com.

  • 2001 State Convention
  • Well, the convention is over marking the closing of another great year. But don't worry, there's still more classical stuff to come. We had a lot of fun this year. There were the 2001-2002 state officer elections, lectures on magic in ancient Rome, certamen (of course), SCL games, Legio XX re-enactments, and outdoor games. I know your all wishing there could be a convention every week, or at least every month, but sadly it cannot be. However, to escape the pain you have multiple option. First, check out the photos and reminesce. Second, send me an e-mail and tell what you liked and didn't like or anything else you need to get out of your system. Third, come to the 2001 NJCL convention in New Orleans. If your interested go the NJCL website or contact our advisor, Ms. Huhn.
